Anti-whalers close in on quarry
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

WITHIN a week, the anti-whaling boat Steve Irwin is expected to be chasing and harassing the Japanese whaling fleet about the Southern Ocean.

But yesterday the Steve Irwin made an unscheduled appearance at Victoria Harbour in Melbourne's Docklands to replace its faulty pistons and to take on a new load of fuel.

Since leaving Melbourne on December 5, the vessel, and its 41-member crew from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, have fruitlessly searched the Southern Ocean for the whalers.
..........

But now that the general location of the Japanese is known he hopes to reach them and disrupt the whale kill, which is expected to number about 1000 mammals. "If we catch them, they'll run from us; we'll just keep them on the run," Mr Watson said.

Yep- keep 'em on the run, while a responsible and forward looking goverment in Australia gathers irrefutable evidence to make the case before the proper international authorities.

2. I wish them luck, but doubt the effectiveness
A boat that has to stop to remove sea-sick crew members, and get pistons replaced, is probably not going to strike fear into the Japanese whaling fleet. Why would they run? The Japanese fleet is there for legitimate scientific research, right?

If Watson's tactic is to ram the Japanese whaling vessels, I think he has a couple of problems. If his ship needs pistons, it's unlikely to win a demolition derby against a fleet. It sounds like a recipe for a Darwin award. Plus, if he does deliberately ram ships, he could be considered a pirate. My money's on the Japanese fleet in that armed conflict.

I hope I'm wrong. If he does ram and sink some Japanese whalers, I'll applaud it.

8. Don't applaud, send money.
Captain Paul Watson and his Sea Shepherd Navy have been risking their lives and freedom to save our ocean and marine life for many years. They have been and are at the top of my charity list. Please get informed about the great work that the Sea Shepherd Society has been doing to help save the planet. Never think that a small group of dedicated people can't make a difference, indeed it is the only thing that has.

12. You should read up on Sea Shepherd and Japanese whaling.
When they show up, the whalers run like scared children.

He's rammed them in the past. There are "can openers" on the side of the Steve Irwin. Thing is, if you keep the processing ship on the run, the kill boats can't offload and therefore can't kill any more.

Quite brilliant. Shame that nobody can get on the whaling vessels in harbor and open them up, sending them to the bottom.

3. the utter fabrication that whale meat is a Japanese tradition
..only began after WW2 when whale meat was eaten out of necessity. The very idea that Japanese fisherman could chase and harpoon whales 100 years ago is pure fantasy.

It doesn't matter where or when on this planet..wretched corporations corrupt and collude in the pursuit of profit.

That is all that killing whales is about..profit driven..nothing more and nothing less. Tradition is a lie in this case.

4. Good Hunting, Sea Shepherd
Ramming in Antarctic waters is pretty hairy.
If both vessels go down in that frosty water everyone could be lost.
Pity Sea Shepherd doesn't have an old diesel boat and just a few
old school torpedoes.....

5. No mercy for those whalers.
I doubt anyone but the military could get a hold of some torpedoes and the mechanism to fire them. But I wonder if a few RPG rounds or shoulder mounted rockets would do the job?

6. These are human beings
What you are saying is the very same thing that fundie anti-abortion folks say. It's okay to kill the doctors because they are defending a life.

I am all for the complete end of whaling and shame on Japan for doing this, but advocating death for people (even if you weren't completely serious) is just not right.

Okay i'm done with my morning bitchfest :)

want some :donut:

13. I don't think so. the ship is pretty big
you'd need a lot to sink it.
If you could catch the ship stationary divers could sabotage its rudder and screws with
thermite or limpet mines. A special attack like that would spare the crew.
hypothetically speaking, of course.

7. Cyclists refer to their legs as "pistons"
Steve Irwin had great pistons.

Show them hell, Captain Watson!
