Clinton: Put Medical Info on Net

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton wants to create a nationwide electronic medical system that would enable doctors to access and share health records, research, prescriptions and other information, she said yesterday.

She also envisions patients accessing lab results online, recording daily blood sugar levels in their electronic record, receiving prompts to take their medication and communicating more often with doctors by e-mail.

"But the systems are not usually in place to do any of that, and these barriers to communication don't serve physicians and they don't serve patients and they are not good for our country," Clinton (D-NY) told about 100 New York City health care leaders at Manhattan's New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Benjamin Chu, president of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp., called the plan a "very thoughtful approach to a very complicated area."

when doctors agree to put their records on the net. It would be nice to know that the dr. that was prepapring to operate on me was qualified and had not been sanctioned for misdeeds.

I can't say whether this is a good or bad idea, but I think the headline tends to give the impression that this info will be easy for anyone to get. If you've ever looked at your checking statement online, you must know that your financial information in on the Internet. I think there are benefits to doing this, and I think that security is something that is going to have to be seriously addressed. I don't have the technical expertise to say whether this can be done, but I wouldn't rule it out so quickly.
