Iraq thanks Bush for vetoing defense bill
Source: Reuters

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq thanked U.S. President George W. Bush on Thursday for vetoing a defense bill that would have let companies and people win compensation from the new Iraqi government for actions by ousted leader Saddam Hussein.

Bush announced his decision to veto the bill last week, after concluding that the provision allowing lawsuits against Iraq would pose a "grave financial risk" to the country.

"The Iraqi government has expressed its gratitude and appreciation for the efforts of President George Bush in using his veto against the congressional bill which would have cancelled the immunity of Iraq," the Iraqi government said in a statement.

It said that exposure to the lawsuits would have made it difficult for Iraq to finance its budget, pay for food imports or rebuild its security forces with its own funds.

2. I wish they would thank us by
taking charge of their own security, and asking our troops to leave.

Well apparently we must control Iraq or otherwise how could we make a law allowing anything on behalf of that country?

6. With no immunity, Iraq might actually...
...hold accountable the slimier end of the American presence there -
Blackwater, construction kickbacks, illegal imprisonment & torture, rigged contracts, looking the other way as 'allies' do wrong, illegal arms sales, among many other unsavory occurances.
Too many Bush cronies making $$ off the billions in US tax dollars. An avalanche of indictments, trials, guilty verdicts could stop the gravy train. Best for them to keep it in house. The military courts are infinitely more controllable.

7. Let's see the Iraqi puppet government take 2 steps outside the Green Zone.
Let's see how long it would take the people of Iraq to "thank" the Iraqi puppet government for thanking george w. bush.
