Former U.S. Presidential Candidate Urges Bush's Impeachment (McGovern)

Former US presidential candidate urges Bush's impeachment

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Former US presidential candidate George McGovern on Sunday called for President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney to be impeached, saying the case for such a dramatic step "is far stronger" than it was against former disgraced president Richard Nixon.

A former US congressman and senator, McGovern was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1972, but lost the election to incumbent Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign amid the Watergate scandal in 1974.

Writing in The Washington Post, McGovern said that after the 1972 election, he stood clear of calls to impeach Nixon because he was afraid it would be interpreted as an act of personal vengeance. But "today I have made a different choice," the prominent Democrat points out. "The case for impeaching Bush and Cheney is far stronger than was the case against Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew after the 1972 election."

- snip -

He cites as evidence the invasion of Iraq under the pretext of removing its non-existent weapons of mass destruction, "illegal tapping" of citizens' telephones by government agents, and shipping of war-on-terror prisoners for interrogation to other countries without respect for the laws of habeas corpus.

4. he says much more..
"McGovern insisted that Bush and Cheney were guilty of numerous impeachable offenses and the country was "much more secure and productive under a Nixon presidency" than under Bush's.

"They have repeatedly violated the Constitution," McGovern writes of Bush and Cheney. "They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world."

5. Thank you, Senator McGovern
They say they don't have the numbers, it would be a distraction from their more serious(?)work, make them seem petty, partisan and vengeful, or potentially lose them an upcoming election, but their unwillingness to check the Bush administration for its crimes just lets us know they do not have the courage to protect the constitution and are undeserving of positions to which we have elected them. Did I get all the excuses?

17. I completely agree, but good luck on that!...
All the logic points to doing this, but I have the feeling the Dem leadership is worried about their exposure in any investigations or hearings. They were complicit and facilitated the way for these war criminals in the administration. At least this is the only reason I can see for their avoidance of doing this. Legislation is being blocked, so what other constructive things can be done? Go get them!

25. I am happy to say that I (finally) voted for him for president

He was, of course, vilified during the campaign as a 'cut-and-run' Democrat since, having actual combat experience (WW2 bomber pilot), he knew what a futile travesty the Viet Nam War was, and had introduced legislation to withdraw all the troops.

The only dishonorable thing I know him to have done was to dump Eagleton as VP candidate after the campaign had started as Eagleton had been treated long in the past for depression with ECT. Damn near did not vote for him after that - but he was running against Nixon, so ...

In any event, he was right about Viet Nam then, and he is right about the Bush Coup Group now.

He will have no more success in being listened to now than he did then.

At least he has had the courage to speak up.

45. The congress rushes to make Bush's criminal acts legal as Reid is doing now
with telecom amnesty. Pelosi and Reid have gone out of their way to keep the president from being impeached. They are complicit in his criminal activity as much as Gonzales or any of the others. There is no justice for those in power. The law only applies to the rest of us and all we will here from new dems when they win is let's put the past behind us. No accountability which translates into there will never ever be a president who will be impeached in the future if this administration gets away with their lawbreaking.

50. McGovern: Time to impeach Bush
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) – George McGovern, the Democratic Party's 1972 nominee for president, is calling on Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

And in an editorial in Sunday's Washington Post, McGovern writes the case for impeaching the current president is "far stronger" than the case made against former President Richard Nixon — the man who soundly defeated McGovern in the general election match up.

"Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses," McGovern writes. "They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time.

"Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world," he continued.

that's suppose to mean, if you can. "Credibility" is the quality of being believable or trustworthy. Are you saying George McGovern is not believable or trustworthy? In the context of his op-ed, what is that suppose to mean? Help me out here, please. Your statement strikes me as a glib generalization. On what do you base your statement that George McGovern is thought by others not to be believable or trustworthy? In making broad, unsubstantiated generalizations demeaning the veracity of one of our esteemed elder statesmen, I judge that it is you, madame, who has no credibility.

55. I recommended earlier
but I'm back now to comment.

When I was 14 I read about the candidates in the 72 election. I admired George McGovern for his principles and for being against the war in Vietnam. My brother had had returned from Vietnam and disputed my father's distain for Jane Fonda. My brother defended her - he knew what a farce that war was. I wanted to do my part against that war and for the election and I begged my mother (who was voting for Nixon) to take me out to work the precinct on election day so I could hand out literature for McGovern. She did. My mother doesn't always agree with me but encouraged me in this conviction for something I felt deeply about.

Well I went out proudly campaigning for the finest man in my life who has ever run for office in my opinion. He is prinicipled, he is intelligent and he doesn't get caught up in emotional slogans. He is also a war hero. He wrote a book Out of Iraq two years ago which has a very sensable plan. He is 85 years old now.

Thank you George McGovern, for all you have done in public service. This is the caliber of public service we used to have in this country, but no longer have.

Nancy

56. Here's a link to the McGovern Center (museum and library)
http://mcgoverncenter.org/museum.htm

Those who discard George McGovern's entire life simply because of who he has endorsed this year are sorry excuses for progressives. I can disagree with him and still recognize his great and courageous contributions to this country. It's ironic that the New York Times has hired Bill Kristol - who has been wrong about almost everything - and no one hired George McGovern - who has throughout his life been right about almost everything.

George McGovern is a great American and an even better human being.

65. He was my first, too

Nancy<<

I was twelve during the Nixon/McGovern campaign. I asked my parents to take me down to volunteer for the McGovern campaign. I helped stuff envelopes. Yeah, I was kid and they were probably just humoring me, but it made me feel like I was part of making a difference. But those were the kinds of people who worked for McGovern.

I second Nancy's heartfelt thank you to George McGovern.

64. How the hell did we let them smear McGovern, who was a WWII bomber pilot
as a coward while that spineless turd Nixon was protrayed as "brave" and "gutsy".

Sounds like 2004. I guess some things never change. Well, it's about time they did before the Old American Republic passed onto the ash-heap of history.

70. I worked in the McGovern campaign in 1972 in New York (Catskills)
I have so much respect and affection for George McGovern. I am as proud of him today as I was all those years ago.

73. Very proud to have cast my very first vote . . .
. . . for George McGovern. To this day, I do not regret that choice. And I never will.

Thank you, Senator, for being a truly courageous and dedicated public servant.

74. Awesome opinion Senator McGovern!
I just wish more politicians had your courage. But then you are part of that "Greatest Generation"..flew B-24s out of Italy over other parts of occupied Europe to bomb German targets unlike our current crop of CHickenhawks....
