Former US presidential candidate urges Bush's impeachment

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Former US presidential candidate George McGovern on Sunday called for President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney to be impeached, saying the case for such a dramatic step "is far stronger" than it was against former disgraced president Richard Nixon.

A former US congressman and senator, McGovern was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1972, but lost the election to incumbent Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign amid the Watergate scandal in 1974.

Writing in The Washington Post, McGovern said that after the 1972 election, he stood clear of calls to impeach Nixon because he was afraid it would be interpreted as an act of personal vengeance. But "today I have made a different choice," the prominent Democrat points out. "The case for impeaching Bush and Cheney is far stronger than was the case against Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew after the 1972 election."

He cites as evidence the invasion of Iraq under the pretext of removing its non-existent weapons of mass destruction, "illegal tapping" of citizens' telephones by government agents, and shipping of war-on-terror prisoners for interrogation to other countries without respect for the laws of habeas corpus.

They say they don't have the numbers, it would be a distraction from their more serious(?)work, make them seem petty, partisan and vengeful, or potentially lose them an upcoming election, but their unwillingness to check the Bush administration for its crimes just lets us know they do not have the courage to protect the constitution and are undeserving of positions to which we have elected them. All the logic points to doing this, but I have the feeling the Dem leadership is worried about their exposure in any investigations or hearings. They were complicit and facilitated the way for these war criminals in the administration. At least this is the only reason I can see for their avoidance of doing this. Legislation is being blocked, so what other constructive things can be done? Go get them!

back in April - Edwards avoided the issue and Kucinich talked about how we would have to go about it, not in anger but out of love for our country. But a week later he introduced articles of impeachment against Cheney.

that's suppose to mean, if you can. "Credibility" is the quality of being believable or trustworthy. Are you saying George McGovern is not believable or trustworthy? In the context of his op-ed, what is that suppose to mean? Help me out here, please. Your statement strikes me as a glib generalization. On what do you base your statement that George McGovern is thought by others not to be believable or trustworthy? In making broad, unsubstantiated generalizations demeaning the veracity of one of our esteemed elder statesmen, I judge that it is you, madame, who has no credibility.

When I was 14 I read about the candidates in the 72 election. I admired George McGovern for his principles and for being against the war in Vietnam. My brother had had returned from Vietnam and disputed my father's distain for Jane Fonda. My brother defended her - he knew what a farce that war was. I wanted to do my part against that war and for the election and I begged my mother (who was voting for Nixon) to take me out to work the precinct on election day so I could hand out literature for McGovern. She did. My mother doesn't always agree with me but encouraged me in this conviction for something I felt deeply about.

Well I went out proudly campaigning for the finest man in my life who has ever run for office in my opinion. He is prinicipled, he is intelligent and he doesn't get caught up in emotional slogans. He is also a war hero. He wrote a book Out of Iraq two years ago which has a very sensable plan. He is 85 years old now.

Thank you George McGovern, for all you have done in public service. This is the caliber of public service we used to have in this country, but no longer have.

Those who discard George McGovern's entire life simply because of who he has endorsed this year are sorry excuses for progressives. I can disagree with him and still recognize his great and courageous contributions to this country. It's ironic that the New York Times has hired Bill Kristol - who has been wrong about almost everything - and no one hired George McGovern - who has throughout his life been right about almost everything.

George McGovern is a great American and an even better human being.

I was twelve during the Nixon/McGovern campaign. I asked my parents to take me down to volunteer for the McGovern campaign. I helped stuff envelopes. Yeah, I was kid and they were probably just humoring me, but it made me feel like I was part of making a difference. But those were the kinds of people who worked for McGovern.
