Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.

Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.

She claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents.

“If you made public all the information that the FBI have on this case, you will see very high-level people going through criminal trials,” she said.

She has to know this places her in grave danger.

"What I found was damning,” she said. “While the FBI was investigating, several arms of the government were shielding what was going on.”

The Turks and Israelis had planted “moles” in military and academic institutions which handled nuclear technology. Edmonds says there were several transactions of nuclear material every month, with the Pakistanis being among the eventual buyers. “The network appeared to be obtaining information from every nuclear agency in the United States,” she said.

They were helped, she says, by the high-ranking State Department official who provided some of their moles – mainly PhD students – with security clearance to work in sensitive nuclear research facilities. These included the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory in New Mexico, which is responsible for the security of the US nuclear deterrent.

In one conversation Edmonds heard the official arranging to pick up a $15,000 cash bribe. The package was to be dropped off at an agreed location by someone in the Turkish diplomatic community who was working for the network.

Sibel Edmonds, the former FBI translator who has been under a Bush administration gag order for the past 5 years, has now begun to disclose some of the classified information she has been prohibited from revealing.

"A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets," reports Great Britain's Sunday Times in the lede of their front page exclusive, headlined "For sale: West’s deadly nuclear secrets."

In the article, just filed tonight, Edmonds reveals details overheard on wiretaps she translated during her time at the FBI, just after 9/11. Her disclosures to the Times reveal a maze of nuclear black market espionage involving U.S. Defense and State Department officials, that resulted in the sale and propagation of nuclear secrets to Turkish and Israeli interests. In turn, that information was then sold to Pakistan and used by A.Q. Kahn for development of nuclear weapons. The secrets were subsequently proliferated to Iran, Libya, North Korea, and potentially al-Qaeda's Osama bin Laden, just weeks prior to September 11th, 2001.

The explosive allegations, shared with the Sunday Times over the last several weeks, follows on the heels of two reports published late last year by The BRAD BLOG, based on our own exclusive interviews with Edmonds, and underscores, yet again, the failure of the U.S. mainstream media to adequately report on issues of extraordinary importance to American national security...

This story has other layers. There were numerous operations during the cold war where information leaked with the sole purpose of consumption and use by the enemy.

This story is, imho, FAR more complex, and for more involved than what is being released. A brief look at the consumers of that information and what has transpired over the last 4 years can lead you to form your own opinion. I have mine.

The majority of our exports are non military. The makeup is varied from telecom gear to industrial equipment of all types.

This is big news. However, a Google news search shows (and will continue to show) how it is being treated. It has been 17 hours since the Times story came out. So far only two related entries sorted by date. One by Ha'aretz, Israel and the other by Brad blog.

...it makes it sound like she explicitly states that Grossman was taking bribes while in the State Dept.

Yet, she doesn't do that. She cites his relationships with Turkish lobbyists, and the fact that he got a job at the Cohen Group after he left State, then merely leaves us with the questions:

Sounds like she doesn't really know for sure that Grossman took bribes. Why else would she only IMPLY that he was dirty instead of coming right out and saying it?

Then there's the possibility that she definitively knows, but won't publish the name herself, or allow the Times to publish it.

Which leads me back to my original question. Why?

Edmonds added that when after 9/11 foreign operatives were taken in for
questioning, the State Department official said "We need to get them out
of the US because we can't afford for them to spill the beans."

The four suspects on the list were released from interrogation and
extradited from the country immediately afterwards.
