For sale: West’s deadly nuclear secrets
Source: The Sunday Times

Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.

Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.

***

She claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents.

“If you made public all the information that the FBI have on this case, you will see very high-level people going through criminal trials,” she said.

3. "....several arms of the government were shielding what was going on.”
"What I found was damning,” she said. “While the FBI was investigating, several arms of the government were shielding what was going on.”

The Turks and Israelis had planted “moles” in military and academic institutions which handled nuclear technology. Edmonds says there were several transactions of nuclear material every month, with the Pakistanis being among the eventual buyers. “The network appeared to be obtaining information from every nuclear agency in the United States,” she said.

They were helped, she says, by the high-ranking State Department official who provided some of their moles – mainly PhD students – with security clearance to work in sensitive nuclear research facilities. These included the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory in New Mexico, which is responsible for the security of the US nuclear deterrent.

In one conversation Edmonds heard the official arranging to pick up a $15,000 cash bribe. The package was to be dropped off at an agreed location by someone in the Turkish diplomatic community who was working for the network.

Source: BRAD BLOG, Sunday Times

SIBEL EDMONDS SPEAKS TO UK SUNDAY TIMES: SAYS U.S. OFFICIALS INVOLVED IN RELEASE OF NUKE SECRETS TO TURKEY, PAKISTAN, IRAN, OTHERS, POSSIBLY EVEN AL-QAEDA
Former 'Gagged' FBI Whistleblower Alleges Pentagon, State Department Officials Overheard Receiving Payoffs in Exchange for Classified Info; Crimes Covered Up at Highest Levels of Government

U.S. Media Scooped Again, Failed to Air Claims After Offer of Disclosure by Edmonds in Recent BRAD BLOG Exclusives...

-- By Brad Friedman

Sibel Edmonds, the former FBI translator who has been under a Bush administration gag order for the past 5 years, has now begun to disclose some of the classified information she has been prohibited from revealing.

"A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets," reports Great Britain's Sunday Times in the lede of their front page exclusive, headlined "For sale: West’s deadly nuclear secrets."

In the article, just filed tonight, Edmonds reveals details overheard on wiretaps she translated during her time at the FBI, just after 9/11. Her disclosures to the Times reveal a maze of nuclear black market espionage involving U.S. Defense and State Department officials, that resulted in the sale and propagation of nuclear secrets to Turkish and Israeli interests. In turn, that information was then sold to Pakistan and used by A.Q. Kahn for development of nuclear weapons. The secrets were subsequently proliferated to Iran, Libya, North Korea, and potentially al-Qaeda's Osama bin Laden, just weeks prior to September 11th, 2001.

The explosive allegations, shared with the Sunday Times over the last several weeks, follows on the heels of two reports published late last year by The BRAD BLOG, based on our own exclusive interviews with Edmonds, and underscores, yet again, the failure of the U.S. mainstream media to adequately report on issues of extraordinary importance to American national security...

12. And ya know what? This is yet MORE proof we need to break ties with AIPAC and the rest of those scum
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 08:28 AM by Roland99
And who has close ties to AIPAC?

Hillary Clinton.
http://clinton.senate.gov/news/statements/details.cfm?id=268474

Barack Obama spoke before AIPAC in March 2007 and said:
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2007/03/obamas_aipac_speech_text_as_pr.html
At the same time, we must preserve our total commitment to
our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military
assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense
programs. This would help Israel maintain its military edge and deter and
repel attacks from as far as Tehran and as close as Gaza.

John Edwards spoke at the 7th Annual Herzliya Conference re: AIPAC policy:
http://www.herzliyaconference.org/Eng/_Articles/Article.asp?ArticleID=1728&CategoryID=223
While Iran is the greatest threat now, but just as alarming is the one on your doorstep. Hamas, with Iranian support, doesn’t make any mistake of its intentions to wipe out Israel, and repeatedly makes calls to raise the banner of Allah over all of Israel. Israel made many concessions. Many settlers gave up there land in order to advance peace.

Israel can take more steps to advance peace like bolstering Abbas against Hamas. While Israel is willing to go back to negotiating table, little has been seen on the Palestinian side. We instead have seen chaos and violence on the street, and no revocation of violence against Israel.

Outside assistance to Palestinian governance is not an entitlement. The US and Europe need to ensure that money going to the Palestinians does not go to lining the pockets of terrorists. For peace, Israel needs a partner.

Absent this partnership, Israel not only has the right to defend itself, it has an obligation to defend itself. This means continuing to ensure Israel’s military strength, diplomatically and economically. The hurdles are clear.

For too long, the current US administration’s commitment to this issue has been halfhearted. Now, on the backdrop of Iraq, they have tried to bring the two sides together. This is especially significant since they have squandered America’s moral authority in the Middle East and around the world.

We should be finding ways to upgrade Israel’s relationship with NATO. This could even some day mean membership. NATO’s mission now goes far beyond just Europe. Therefore, it is only natural that NATO seeks to include Israel.

I weep for this nation.

19. I was hesitant to add this but your comment..
points out the need. It is not about the Jews that run the country../sarc

This story has other layers. There were numerous operations during the cold war where information leaked with the sole purpose of consumption and use by the enemy.

This story is, imho, FAR more complex, and for more involved than what is being released. A brief look at the consumers of that information and what has transpired over the last 4 years can lead you to form your own opinion. I have mine.

Janes has vast information on this topic and is free to read at your library.

22. I didn't mean to imply anything specificially about "the Jews that run the country"
Far from it.

And, to me, AIPAC isn't even about Jews. It's about an Israeli equivalent to our neocons...the AEI and WINEP type groups that control policy, essentially. The batshit insane ideologues that WANT eternal war and WANT to divert massive amounts of taxpayer dollars to bigger and more powerful penises...er...weaponry.

AIPAC, WINEP, ATC, ABC, XYZ... I don't care if they're Jewish, Hindu, Christian, or Druids. They are INSANE and they are leading this nation and this world down a path that is completely untenable.

24. Well, last I knew, Jordan and Egypt weren't planning pre-emptive attacks against anyone.
And, just because it's been done in the past, doesn't mean it needs to be done in the future.

Why does military capability have to be so primary to our nation's exports?

Do you not see the problems inherent in that?

25. NATO nations and Other Allies
consume a product we manufacture. The French and Germans also export military systems. As do the British. Most 1st world nations do. All nations plan strikes. I am sure there is some plan in the pentagon basement to invade mexico or iceland.

Actually doing it is another thing.

Israel will not strike Iran without notice to the US. Like Kahn, this situation is far more complex than what is in the media.

The majority of our exports are non military. The makeup is varied from telecom gear to industrial equipment of all types.

41. Actually, it's not a bad idea.
Maintain a domestic police force, including counterterrorism, and then let the policing of the world function slip away. Keep the Coast Guard, ditch the Marines. Then we can wag our fingers instead of getting nuked when China reels in Taiwan.

What's the harm in that?

Much of this in December 2005 is mentioned by the Times On Line story:

Which of the candidates will demand a full investigation?

This is big news. However, a Google news search shows (and will continue to show) how it is being treated. It has been 17 hours since the Times story came out. So far only two related entries sorted by date. One by Ha'aretz, Israel and the other by Brad blog.

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&tab=wn&ned=us&q=sibel+edmonds&ie=UTF-8&scoring=n

Google again at the end of day.

The only reason I can think of is that she didn't want them to name that person.

33. Did Edmonds tell Luke Ryland this directly?
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 04:11 PM by MilesColtrane
When Ryland writes this:

http://wotisitgood4.blogspot.com/2007/05/who-wants-to-gag-sibel-edmonds-and-why.html

"Former Deputy Secretary of State, Marc Grossman, apparently was a key player in the criminal enterprise. When he left State in 2005, he immediately began earning the big bucks - more than $2 million p.a. Sibel argues that this payoff was for selling his soul, and selling out the national interest while he was in office."

...it makes it sound like she explicitly states that Grossman was taking bribes while in the State Dept.

Yet, she doesn't do that. She cites his relationships with Turkish lobbyists, and the fact that he got a job at the Cohen Group after he left State, then merely leaves us with the questions:

http://nswbc.org/Op%20Ed/Part2-FNL-Nov29-06.htm

"Did Grossman beat the odds and get lucky as soon as he got out of the State Department? Did he hit the jackpot? Or, did he diligently and industriously work at it, while in his position as the ambassador to Turkey and as Deputy Secretary of State? Did he sell his soul while under his oath of office? Did he sell our government’s soul? Did he sell our nation and its interests? If so; for what and how much?"

Sounds like she doesn't really know for sure that Grossman took bribes. Why else would she only IMPLY that he was dirty instead of coming right out and saying it?

Then there's the possibility that she definitively knows, but won't publish the name herself, or allow the Times to publish it.

Which leads me back to my original question. Why?

The four suspects on the list were released from interrogation and
