Edwards 'at peace' campaigning; in race until end
Source: AP

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. --
Back in his native South Carolina, John Edwards appears relaxed and says he's confident in a campaign that's been overshadowed by Democratic rivals seeking the same primary win that he earned here four years before.

"I'm very much at peace," the former North Carolina senator told The Associated Press on Friday. "I think the fact I did as well as I did in Iowa and New Hampshire against two candidates who had well over a million dollars leaves me very confident and very optimistic."

Edwards placed second in the Iowa caucuses and third in New Hampshire's primary and has embarked on a four-day road trip around this state, which is critical to his campaign. A win appears to be a tough hill to climb: New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama have held the top spots in polls here for months.

Edwards, to be expected, said he doesn't buy into polls - other than to show voters that three candidates are competitive.

3. Senator Edwards, we need your voice.
The other candidates have a lot of problems. Only Edwards focuses on the needs of the American people and the manipulation of our government by the mega-corporations.

I am volunteering for Edwards every single day. After I finished my workday, my husband and I drove to a house to deliver a yard sign. After that, we canvassed in our neighborhood -- knocking on doors from a precinct list. We left Edwards brochures at houses where people were not home, and we talked to several voters.

Yesterday, I spent a couple of hours tabling, and before that I walked my precinct. Those of us who support Edwards cannot rely on somebody else, somebody who is being paid to get out there and talk to voters about our candidate. We have to do it ourselves.

A lot of DUers complain about how the corporate media controls everything. OK, this is your chance to have a little control. Get out there and start campaigning. Don't just march down the street surrounded by like minded rebels. Don't just sit at home and watch TV and fret about the whether your candidate is getting a fair shake. Get out there and talk to your neighbors. Talk to the little old lady who lives down the street. Talk to the kid who looks like a gangbanger. Ask them to consider your candidate. Give them his website address. Offer to bring a yardsign. Remind voters to think and do some research on their own before they vote. That's democracy. That's taking your country back. Don't get mad, get active.

4. Edwards needs to not quietly fade away after the convention / election.
Assuming a miracle does not occur, and Edwards does not beat the odds that are overwhelmingly stacked against him, what I really desire is for him to continue to be a loud outspoken voice for a renewed war on poverty.

I want John Edwards to become the Al Gore of Poverty.

Economic justice is probably the most critical issue facing the world today, and poverty itself is a staggering disaster that is completely 100% avoidable. I sincerely hope that John Edwards will work as hard as Al Gore in forcing the media to take notice.

I credit Al Gore for much of the reason why climate change went from being out of the news to being a major piece of public media attention. And Al Gore helped accomplish that despite the fact that acknowledging a climate change crisis is not good for any of the business interests that dominate the media.

Even though poverty and its root causes are not a comfortable subject for the media, I absolutely believe Edwards has the power to force discussion of poverty into the limelight in much the same way Al Gore helped bring the subject of global warming in to the mainstream.

Sounds like he has died. Which, figuratively, he has. Buh-bye now John. You don't back Hillary and you're just the Nader of 2008.

18. No, John backs ordinary Americans, not the elite.
You do your candidate no justice by saying this.

15. A vote for Edwards is still a vote against Hilary in the Primaries
I have read in several places that some do like Edwards over Obama, but feel that they need to unite behind Obama as Edwards doesn't have a chance to beat Hilary in the primaries... I personally don't think Hilary will make a competent president. Also, it will hurt the Democrats position- as she is so polarizing more than half of the votes cast in the primaries so far were against her!
The Republicans want her as the candidate because they know that ANYONE that they put up there will probably beat her.
However, if you combine the total percentage of Obama and Edwards, they cream Hilary! So it really doesn't matter if you voted for either one of them, as long as you didn't vote for HIlary. So, vote for the one that you want to win- not the one that everyone thinks will win...
In this way, Edward's numbers can rise. And, he might actually have a chance.
I like Edwards because he has addressed the Autistic Children's issue- none of the other candidates in either party have spent the time to come up with a plan, as Edwards did.
I also believe that he will stand up for the American against the lobbyists and special interest groups that buy our lawmakers...
Edwards is the people's candidate, and polls say he will do the best against the Republicans - which is the most important. Obama is somewhat polarizing because of his religious affiliations.. and all the other reasons that people would come back in force against him.

21. "I'm very much at peace" - a revealing comment.
I have thought for a long time that one of the reasons John and Elizabeth have stayed in the race has been to give them something to do besides worry about her cancer. I was very grateful to have my mind-absorbing job for this very reason.
