MAHER ON NH PRIMARY: Bother by Diebold Control of Election Results
Source: BRAD BLOG

BILL MAHER ON NH PRIMARY: 'I'm Bothered That a Private Company (Diebold) Runs the Machines, Are Only Ones Who Know What Went On'
Says 'Election All for Naught if We Can't Trust Results'

Catherine Crier: 'Glad This Controversy's Come Up, Will Elevate Voting Machine Issue In Minds of American People'...

From tonight's Bill Maher…Some key quotes from the video...

MAHER: I'm not saying something went wrong, but it does bother me that a private company runs the polling machines and that only they certainly, seem to know what went on in that .

CRIER: What I'm glad about is that whole controversy's come up and that they're going to go back and take a look. It's going to elevate the whole voting machine issue in the minds of the American people before the elections.

(APPLAUSE)

MAHER: We have so much debate, and there's so much interest in this election…but it all comes to naught if we can't trust what the result is.

1. Bravo !!!
and thanks to Dennis K., this will come about. I heard he may be launching a fundraiser for this. We as American voters have an obligation to support this, for our own peace of mind before the general election!!

4. Sometimes Bill Maher is right on ...
But, back in the days when he was on a national network rather than a prime cable channel, I watched him regularly and some of his positions were embarassing (not financing epidurals -- which are at least said to be much healthier than commonly used general anaesthesia -- for poor women giving birth, or as he puts it, crapping out babies????????).

One thing -- I remember distinctly that Bill Maher had endorsed Gore in 2000. Then, not long after, and without explanation for CHANGING his position, or acknowledging the change, he shifted to Nader. I suspect that he was pressured by the higher ups, something that did NOT happen to Charles Miller when he supported W Bush in 04.

Don't forget, that alone could have tipped the election, or at least made it a squinch less convenient for the Repugs to steal....

6. I am hearing more than Maher's typical sensational blather on the NH story
I am not a NH conspiracy believer*, but the schnozz is doing the world a favor by noting Diebold's control of elections.

*never say never

7. Naw.. I don't think he was pressured to switch to Nadar...
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 07:28 AM by annabanana
I just don't think he's as well informed and insightful as he thinks he is. (A bit of a lightweight)

However.. He seems to have grasped the basic problem with the voting machines, proving it's not that difficult a concept. And he has a platform, so on this I say "More power to him"!

8. Not this crap again
Mahr is a pseudosophisticated boob.

The machines used in New Hampshire provide a verifiable paper trail. The ballots can be hand counted. In 2004, the Nader campaign paid for a recount in several precincts where they suspected funny business. The hand count matched the machine count. In dozens of recounts for the legislature, county commissioner, city council, etc, the hand counts match the machine count. The only changes that occur are the result of stray marks on the ballot, weirdos who write commentary next to each candidates name, and two ballots misfeeding into the reader at the same time. The final otcome never changes by more than three or four votes out of, say, a thousand cast.

I'm an Obama supporter.

I won a city council seat running against a machine candidate who was backed by the city's election official.

If anyone has a reason to be paranoid, it's me. But I'm not. The machines aren't the reason for Tuesday's outcome.

9. No they're not...
...probably...but they aren't secure and they aren't reliable and they aren't transparent. Publicizing this recount is a good way to educate the public and improve our voting system. I'm all for that...and getting the $$$$ out. :7

14. Which "crap"? This whole democracy "crap" thing?
BlueDogDemocratNH foolishly said:

The machines used in New Hampshire provide a verifiable paper trail.

Neato. So let's verify them, then. Unless you consider that to be "crap", and you'd prefer that 80% of the ballots (they're not "paper trails", they're ballots) go wholly uncounted and unverified by anyone.

The final otcome never changes by more than three or four votes out of, say, a thousand cast.

Cool. So no bother to even check a single one of the 80% of the ballots counted by nobody on Diebold machines, as run by the corrupt company (LHS Associates)that has complete control of the process and could program the memory cards to offer any result they wish?

Good idea. And since there were absolutely no bank robberies in New Hampshire for the past week, what say we just leave the doors unlocked overnight tonight, eh?

And you wonder why there are so many people easily scammed by conmen? BlueDogDemNH is your easy mark, boys. Go get 'em.

I'm an Obama supporter.

How swell for you. I'm a democracy supporter. Hope that's okay.

If anyone has a reason to be paranoid, it's me. But I'm not.

Then you're a sucker.

The machines aren't the reason for Tuesday's outcome.

Thank you for your speculation and guess work. I prefer evidence with my democracy. But thanks for ringing in.

(With "friends" like BlueDogDemNH, who needs James Tobin or Allen Raymond?)

The Winning Ticket: Hillary and Diebold in 2008
11/01/08 "ICH" -- -- Something doesn't ring true about Hillary's “upset” victory in the New Hampshire primary. It just doesn't pass the smell test. All the exit polls showed Clinton trailing Obama by significant margins. In fact, in the Gallup Poll taken just days before the election, "Crocodile tears" Hillary was down by a whopping 13 points. Her “turnaround” was not only unexpected, but downright shocking. The results for the rest of the candidates--excluding Clinton and Obama---were all within the margin of error. Clinton was the only anomaly. Surprise, surprise.

11. All Private Companies Should Be THROWN OUT of the Election Process
they are compromised by their own business interests and are proven to be fraudulent in the past. It's stupid to allow them in to the process. Real stupid.

12. It was great to see this discussed on "Real Time"
Bill Maher has a platform, and I was amazed to see this brought up and discussed. He's usually the anti-conspiracy-theorist. The fact that everyone on the panel, except for Tony Snow, agreed with him was even better.

I don't always agree with Bill Maher, but I was both surprised and happy to see them discussing the oddness of the numbers on his show. The more people who become aware of Diebold, or Premier, the better.
