Macy's Laying Off 271 Workers
Source: AP

POSTED: 7:39 pm EST January 12, 2008

CHICAGO -- After disappointing holiday sales, Macy's Incorporated says it will be eliminating 271 jobs in the northern Midwest.

The department store chain will also discontinue most of its wine business in the region and shutter several food operations.

The layoffs take effect in March and affect about 100 in the Chicago area, 70 in Detroit and 100 in the Minneapolis region.

The department-store operator closed food operations on Thursday at its stores in Bolingbrook, Oak Brook, Aurora and Vernon Hills. It plans to shut its in-store wine shops at all stores except for the State Street flagship in Chicago.

Cincinnati-based Macy's spokeswoman Andrea Schwartz says no sales positions will be eliminated in this wave of layoffs.

4. Macy's
Well at least these employees can find jobs with the other department stores. Oh wait, there aren't any other department stores; Macy's bought them out.

5. They destroyed Marshall Fields
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 09:50 PM by cheryl27
Many are boycotting in the Midwest. I worked at the beautiful State Street store for years; Macy's has turned it and all the former Fields stores into junk stores. Refuse to step foot inside.

7. Another Macy's boycotter here!
I also refuse to shop there! I miss Fields terribly, especially during the holidays! I walked through a couple of the Macy's this holiday season and I couldn't believe how filthy they were - it just made me sad. And their holiday decorations were so tacky - I missed the elegance of Fields.

12. Why do people shop in upscale department stores?
Why do people go to buy stuff in upscale department stores which obviously spend a lot on the real estate, as well as on the construction of the building, decor, and fixtures?

I can see paying for superior sales service, returns service, etc. But you can't bring the decor home with you.

13. I loved Marshall Fields
I used to go there all the time when I lived in Chicago. It was a Chicago institution. Now it's just another Macy's. I've heard these comments from more than one Chicagoan.

17. It's the same with Kaufmann's in Pittsburgh.
Macy's bought out Kaufmann's, and it just isn't the same.
