Wexler Calls For Cheney's Impeachment
By John Bresnahan

Jan 15, 2008

(The Politico) Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.) is urging the House Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney, despite opposition from House Democratic leaders.

- snip -

"There's a litany of issues that need to be heard," Wexler said. "This administration has abused the power of executive privilege. This administration has completely avoided testifying before Congress on any one of a host of six, seven, eight issues. “Whether we are talking about the manipulation of intelligence on Iraq,” he went on, “whether we are talking about the outing of a covert CIA agent, whether we're talking about the illegal use of torture, whether we're talking about the potentially unlawful firing of U.S. prosecutors - on all of these issues, the administration has thus far successfully used the power of executive privilege."

But impeachment hearings would be different, Wexler said, since the White House could not raise a privilege claim in order to avoid answering questions from lawmakers.

"In an impeachment hearing, the administration does not have the power of executive privilege," Wexler said, noting that the secret tapes that helped bring down President Richard Nixon did not surface until the House Judiciary Committee began impeachment hearings. When Republicans, in a bid to embarrass House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders, voted for the measure, the House was thrown into a brief deadlock. The measure was eventually approved and sent to the Judiciary Committee, where Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) has declined to take action, despite pressure from Wexler and liberal activists outside Congress.

I used to love Conyers, but I guess he's like the rest. He makes promises when he can't do anything then falls back on them when he gets elected or in this case, in the majority. I'm greatly disappointed in him. It makes me sad coz I really thought that he was one politician that we could count on.

18. When the California Democratic Convention was held ...
Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 10:06 PM by aggiesal
earlier this year (July) in San Diego, Conyers came to the
convention and mention that "... all he needs is three more
Congress Members backing impeachment, and he'll move on it,
even without Pelosi."

When someone in the crowd asked about the current
motion H.Res. 333 regarding impeaching Cheney, being held
up in his Judicial Committee, he ignored the question.
This resolution already had 14 signers.
Why didn't he move forward with the resolution then?

Last January (2007), Conyers spoke at a huge rally on the
National Mall and declared
"We can fire them!"
but later explained that what he meant was that we could
wait for two years and Bush and Cheney's terms would end.

I don't expect anything to happen, because I'm afraid
the current Democratic Leadership would be implicated
as accomplices.

23. Aye, the horse is dead people.
Considering both Bush and Cheney only have about a year to go I dont see the point of pushing for an impeachment now. *sigh*
Criminal charges after he is out of office though, I smile to think about that but I doubt any will be forthcoming since Bush is likely to issue a massive amount of pardons to Cheney and others who were in his administration.
Kinda wish the president was prohibited by law at granting any pardons to anyone who was in his administration or acted under orders of the president or the government without say a 60% vote from the senate supporting the pardon.

I just dont think thats a good idea to do as for Iran, they are a threat and its not because of the so called neocon war machine its because they have a buncha nuts running the country in Iran still.
Course anything this administration claims in regards to them needs to be looked at closely especially because of the issues that happened with the intelligence in regards to Iraq.

commited by Bush in regards to Iran to justify impeachment? I am not aware of anything myself that has occured in regards to Bush and Iran, other stuff though like the wiretaps and the torture.....well that should be impeachable but clearly the majority of republicans support both torture and warrantless wiretaps so thats not gonna happen sadly and the democrats just dont have the votes needed.

67. I did not say that.
We were discussing Iran and impeaching him a possible chance he and Bush might falsify information to start a war in Iran I thought?
As for Cheney not committing "any" crimes, well I think he probably has but considering the executive privilege shield the administration has been using I would not count on any evidence being provided to prove it enough for an impeachment let alone a court of law where he might be tried.

why do they go on and on and on and on with their teasing?

we get it. Dubya would have to get caught on YouTube f'n Barney before Nance and Harry would even begin to consider it. You won't vote to impeach the most criminal, treasonous, secretive, anti-constitutional executive branch in the history of the USA because some of you may be implicated and/or you're convinced that if you do what is right for the future of the union, it might mean a complicated messy fight where the BushBots ripe with anger over their mass persecution complex will come out in hoards in November to snatch the Presidency from you.

So please just stop it.

59. Ok
There are problems with this argument.

1. Unless the crimes of this administration are recognized as crimes it will be EASIER (not harder) for any other Republican to run for office without having to worry about being painted with the sins of their patron.

2. Waiting and worrying does NOTHING to energize our base which is getting weaker, particularly with the increasingly corporate candidates available. Some demonstration of partisanship and opposition to Bush is needed. Desperately.

3. There are no hordes of Bushbots. Though there are republicans, even some that now favor impeachment. Impeaching Bush is not going to excite them, many even sound as though it would be a relief to no longer have to defend him. Also there are the hordes of independents that are anti-war and expected electing Democrats would actuall do something useful.

there are still other points to make against this argument. to be continued

Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 03:07 PM by donkeyotay
The charges against Vice President Cheney are not personal. They go to the core of the actions of this Administration, and deserve consideration in a way the Clinton scandal never did. The American people understand this, and a majority support hearings according to a November 13 poll by the American Research Group. In fact, 70% of voters say that Vice President Cheney has abused his powers and 43% say that he should be removed from office right now. The American people understand the magnitude of what has been done and what is at stake if we fail to act. It is time for Congress to catch up.

The full text is on Wexler's site. Petition count is up to 199,462.
