UN official: Do more for Katrina victims

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A United Nations official who has toured parts of Louisiana and Mississippi devastated by Hurricane Katrina says the thousands of victims of the storm resemble poor people displaced by natural disasters in other parts of the world.

"Whether you're displaced in a rich country or a poor country, what remains the same is you need to get the help, the assistance of the authorities, of the communities, to be able to restart a normal life, and the people I have met are not there yet," said Walter Kalin, the UN secretary general's representative on the human rights of internally displaced persons.

Kalin spoke Wednesday, a day when he also saw hard-hit areas of the two states. He met Tuesday with evacuees in Houston.

The United Nations' human rights committee has been critical of the Bush administration's efforts to help people displaced by Katrina, particularly those without the financial means to rebuild.

1. I'm sure the shrub will
chastise the U.N. and possibly invade. it sounds like they're against dubya and his agenda.

Besides, bush is a passionate conservative. He wouldn't let the people of his own country go homeless after a natural disaster. He makes sure that every citizen of NO and Mississippi have proper shelter along with the hundreds of thousands of veterans.

Hey, U.N., call for sanctions against the U.S. I bet a LOT of countries would join in.

2. Could anything be More Embarrassing?

To have an international body come in and say the US isn't doing enough for its own? To know that BushCo will totally ignore these criticisms and recommendations?

Late last year, TIME magazine's managing editor proposed (and was willing to co-sponsor, along with other national publications, Women of the Storm and other Gulf groups) a Presidential Debate to take place in New Orleans, and to put Presidential candidates on the spot about what they will do about the continuing and massive problems in Katrina recovery. This would have put Katrina recovery back in the National spotlight and possibly bring some progress.

The closest they'll come to N.O., however, is the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS, where the First presidential debate will be held on Friday, September 26. Oxford is about as far as you can get from Gulfport and still be in the state. :eyes:

5. Thank God For This - Isn't it time for someone to help these people? How long has it been???
I cannot even imagine how it must feel to be a family - like the one I raised many years ago with 5 children - living in a small RV for years! How the "H" can someone like Bush say he is a Christian and allow this to happen???? It is blaspheming to do this to our own people! It is beyond a sin it is being Hitleresk. I am glad to see the rest of the world bring this to the light of day! Thank God someone cares!!!!!!!!:grouphug:

7. Did they ever produce a Katrina death count?
Or the chimp just charmed his way out of letting that Democratic stronghold get annihilated?

11. There were too many "darkies" there for the chimp
He doesn't do well to help people who aren't "anointed"
