UK Army chiefs claim US 'trumpets' body count as tensions between forces rise
Last updated at 10:07am on 17th January 2008

Simmering tensions between American and British military chiefs spilled into the open today after the US defence secretary attacked Nato's performance in Afghanistan.

Robert Gates said the 30,000 US troops in the country were “doing a terrific job” in confronting the Taliban insurgency but complained that some allies were not properly trained and lacked experience tracking militants.

A British military spokesman hit back by claiming that the UK did not “trumpet body counts” and had more stringent rules of engagement.

The row started when Mr Gates told the Los Angeles Times: “Most of the European forces, Nato forces, are not trained in counter-insurgency. I'm worried we're deploying {military advisers} that are not properly trained and I'm worried we have some military forces that don't know how to do counter-insurgency operations.”

1. Hey! I have an idea!
The US should invade Great Britain because they give support to the ter'ists and they hate America!

4. I've got news for Gates: The US doesn't have proper training or (successful)
experience in finding insurgents either!

All we seem to do is chase them from point A to point B and then back to point A again killing a lot of innocent civilians in the process not to mention losing Solider's lives.

2. Mr. Gates, you can always just do it yourselves, you know?
I can't think of another NATO country that actually wants to be anywhere NEAR Afghanistan.

I think it's pretty pissy to use NATO to nakedly reinforce agressive US Foreign Policy and then complain about the quality of said NATO committment.

Could it possibly be that the reason that other NATO forces are not properly trained in counter-insurgency operations is that since we do not have a history of blowing the shit out of other sovereign nations, we don't have a lot of experience in countering insurgencies?

I am sure other NATO nations will be clamouring to send more troops into the meat-grinder NOW...

3. And US troops have had such a success rate dealing with insurgencies.
