Bush: Economy Stimulus Package Needed

By JEANNINE AVERSA

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush has decided that an economic stimulus package is needed to help the sagging economy, the White House said Thursday. And Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has endorsed the concept of an economic stimulus package to avert a recession as long as it only temporary and is quickly implemented. Bernanke pledged anew to aggressively slash a key interest rate as needed to bolster the economy.

"The president does believe that over the short term, to deal with the softening of the economy, that some boost is necessary," Bush spokesman Tony Fratto said.

The comments marked the first White House confirmation that Bush, confronting a deepening economic crises that has shaken much of the nation, supports government intervention. Until now, the White House said the president was just considering some type of short-term boost.

Fratto would not divulge the details or what the stimulus would look like, other than to say all options are being considered.

Anyone care to take a guess at how muck this will be eventually weighted towards the supply side? I'm gonna say 75%

2. gee, wasn't it just last week that chimpy was saying how 'strong' the economy was?
and now, all of a sudden apparently, it needs stimulus.

Of course, the MSM, with its 15 second memory, will give him a pass.

5. Do these congressional "stimulus" plans ever work?
It all moves so slow. The Congress enacted a "stimuls" plan in 1977 as a remedy for the recession that ended in 1975.

Also, this sounds like a stimulate the economy until I can get my arse out of office plan. Sure I'd love to have an extra $500-$1000 or whatever it turned out to be but it would mostly go to bills, and be gone in about 15 minutes. Without addressing our core problems this isn't going to do anything but balloon the deficit and pad the pockets of the wealthy.
