Canada puts U.S., Israel on torture watchlist -CTV
Source: Reuters

OTTAWA, Jan 17 (Reuters) - An official Canadian government document has put both the United States and Israel on a watch list of countries where prisoners run the risk of being tortured, CTV television reported on Thursday.

The revelation is likely to embarrass the minority Conservative government, which is a staunch U.S. ally.

The document mentions the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where a Canadian man is being held.

CTV said the document was part of a course on torture awareness given to Canadian diplomats to help them determine whether prisoners they visited abroad had been mistreated.

7. It just makes me sad
on every level. Sad and enraged that "our" government stoops to torture to get the answers they want to hear. It would not surprise me if other countries placed sanctions on the US for war mongering.

24. As long as you're not praising Harper's government.
It was the result of a screwup on their part:

"The government mistakenly provided the document to Amnesty International Canada as part of a court case the rights organization has launched against Ottawa over the treatment of detainees in Afghanistan."

("Mistakenly," huh?)

3. Rightly so.
Will we declare the Canadian government terrorists now? Or just hope nobody notices that our neighbor is (in a small way) speaking out against our various torture programs and pissing-upon of the Geneva convention?

6. As a Canadian, I'm loving this - for two reasons
One - it shows a little backbone
Two - it makes our Conservative government uncomfortable.

I love this bit of cognitive dissonance:

A spokesman for Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier tried to distance Ottawa from the document. "The training manual is not a policy document and does not reflect the views or policies of this government," he said.

It doesn't reflect the views of the government, but since it's fact, they put it in the training manual!

8. Canada puts U.S., Israel on torture watchlist
Source: Reuters

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's foreign ministry has put the United States and Israel on a watch list of countries where prisoners risk being tortured and also classifies some U.S. interrogation techniques as torture, according to a document obtained by Reuters on Thursday.

The revelation is likely to embarrass the minority Conservative government, which is a staunch ally of both the United States and Israel.

The document -- part of a training course on torture awareness given to diplomats -- mentions the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where a Canadian man is being held.

The man, Omar Khadr, is the only Canadian in Guantanamo. His defenders said the document made a mockery of Ottawa's claims that Khadr was not being mistreated.

Proof again that Orwell was almost right-it's 2007 and the USA instead of 1984 and England.

16. I say this is very good news.
It's about time one of our "allies" stood up and outed us for the barbarians we are.
So when will one of them make the arrests?

Makes one proud to be American. :puke:

23. This is the most pitiful thing I can recall about the U.S.A.
I recall in the 60s and 70s, the old Soviet Union was always at the top of the list.........now thanks to the "decider" we are..
Nothing more can be said...

25. THANK YOU CANADA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe this will wake up the American people.

Many of us have been writing our Legislature to close Guantanamo and prosecute those who authorized Torture.

We have protested and helped rallies to close Guantanamo.

We have written Editorials of how torture does not work, of how it is against the Geneva Conventions.

*** I HOPE THIS IS THE START OF THE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY ****
