British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier has been killed and five others injured
by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry
of Defence said today.

The soldiers' vehicle was hit by a mine around 3km north-
east of the town of Musa Qala yesterday, the MoD
confirmed.

The soldier who was killed was attached to the 2nd
Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. His next of kin have been
informed, and the MoD has expressed its "deep regret" at
the death.

"The casualties were evacuated by helicopter to the ISAF
(International Security Assistance Force] medical facility
at Camp Bastion and Kandahar airfield," a statement said.
"Sadly, one of the soldiers was pronounced dead at the
scene."
