BANGALORE: US-based computer maker Dell is shifting its hardware design unit from its research and development centre here to Austin and Taiwan, a top company official has said.

"Hardware design is being slowly phased out from the centre here to our centres in Austin and Taiwan", Dell India's Enterprise Strategy Group Director Pallab Talukdar told reporters here.

On the Dell's R & D center here, Talukdar said there has been a shift in focus from hardware design to software, management and testing.

The R&D centre, which has strength of over 500, will be ramped up, Talukdar said without specifying the number.

3. Just so you know....
Michael Dell is a huge freeper. Celebrate the jobs but stay away from Dell's crappy products and lousey customer service.

4. The last Dell I bought about three years ago started falling apart literally from Day One.
The DVD drive stopped working, the hard drive was damaged, on and on. Then, their post-purchase customer service policy was gutted. And then (IIRC) they moved all production facilities offshore. That was the last straw. I bought an HP and have been very happy with it.

Given that they've brought jobs back to the US, I may give Dell another try next time I am in the market for a new one.
