US falls short on new Iran sanctions
Source: AP

BERLIN - The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany agreed Tuesday to impose new sanctions on Iran over its suspect nuclear program, yet the measures appeared to fall short of what the Bush administration had wanted.

After months of diplomatic bickering and U.S. pressure, Washington and its European allies overcame strong Chinese and Russian resistance to a third U.N. sanctions resolution and they all approved a draft that expands and strengthens the penalties that were in the two earlier ones.

The draft was presented as a sign of international resolve that Iran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and unity on the need to press the country into suspending its uranium enrichment that can produce material needed to make the bomb.

But the document, hailed by U.S. officials as a victory for the Bush administration's tough line on Iran, was not released. And participants in the two-hour negotiating session that produced it here pointedly refused to discuss details.

4. UN powers agree on new Iran draft (BBC)
Permanent members of the UN Security Council - and Germany - have agreed on the contents of a new draft resolution of fresh sanctions against Iran.
The announcement was made by the German foreign minister after talks in Berlin with his counterparts from the US, France, the UK, Russia and China.

The US and its European allies want a third set of sanctions over Iran's refusal to suspend uranium enrichment.

Convincing Beijing and Moscow to sign up to a new wave of UN sanctions was made more complicated last month by the publication of an American intelligence report which declared that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons programme in 2003.

5. Something was passed, but the language is secret.

Probably says "this bill specifies that curious george will be allowed to say a bill was passed. As far as Iran, nothing really changes: the entire world, except curious george and his 19 friends in israel, agree to continue negotiations, which are working."

Secret detentions, secret balloting, now secret documents passed by the Security Council. Probably leading up to secret locations for * and his buddies after the (secret) shit finally hits the fan.
