Apple quarterly profits soar to record 1.58 billion dollars (Best quarter in company history)
Source: AFP

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Apple Inc. reported Tuesday its best quarter ever as profits soared to 1.58 billion dollars in the last three months of 2007 on demand for its Macintosh computers, iPhones and iPods.
"We're thrilled to report our best quarter ever, with the highest revenue and earnings in Apple's history," said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs.

Apple's profits of 1.76 dollars per share topped those from the same quarter in 2006 by more than 50 percent. Apple posted revenue of 9.6 billion dollars, with sales outside the United States accounting for 45 percent of that figure. Apple reported shipping 2.32 million Macintosh computers, a 44 percent increase from the number of machines shipped in the last three months of 2006.

Sales of iPod MP3 players rose 17 percent to top 22 million, while iPhone sales for the quarter were 2.32 million.

Jobs said last week that Apple has sold more than four million iPhones, touch-screen mobile devices that combine telephone, video, music and Internet access.

15. Question: If OS X Is So Awesome,...
why so many fixes? 100 fixes and thats after a major upgrade. I thought it was the be-all end-all of super-perfect goodness. Oh and Steve Jobs is a dick.

> Question: If OS X Is So Awesome, why so many fixes?

Because modern software is complex, so human errors arise. See:

o http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hrair_limit

Good companies fix their mistakes, bad companies leave you
dangling for months, years, or forever.

> Oh and Steve Jobs is a dick

So are many leaders of industry. So are people who post snarky
replies on message boards when they probably already know the
facts perfectly well. What's new?

19. Modern Software Is Complex Huh?
How come that excuse never worked for Microsoft? Oh, and I know I'm a dick. The difference is that I don't have throngs of people, who think I'm the second coming, that I gouge for incredibly complex software running on off-the-shelf hardware.
One more question. Why is Apple so awesome for buying NeXT software and using their IP in OSX while MS doing the same with DOS is evil, evil, evil?

20. NeXT/Apple wasn't the sort of hands-off relationship as was QDOS/Gates.

NeXT's relationship with Apple wasn't the same sort of
hands-off relationship as was the relationship between
QDOS and Bill Gates.

In the case of NeXT, this was Steve Job's next venture
(hence the name). When Apple's post-Jobs leadership
flamed out and the Board wanted to bring back Jobs,
he basically cut a deal with Apple that they would
have to bring back inside his whole new venture. They
did and the result is very pleasant history.

In the case of QDOS, Gates needed an operating system to
license to IBM. He knew the deal was going to be worth
millions (and it turned out to be worth billions) but
he still only paid the developer of QDOS $50,000.

(Reference: Big Blues: The Unmaking of IBM by
Paul Carroll, ISBN 978-0517882214)

This was a dirty deal by Gates, and exemplified early
on the way that Microsoft did (and does) business.

22. Different corporate culture. MS has a "good enough" attitude
about their software.

Read the first part to get an idea about why Apple products are generally better out the box than MS.

Those 100 fixes are for the most part, things that have not shown up as a problem in my daily use. The only problem I am having is occasional beach ball with Safari. it only shows when I have a lot of tabs open in my browser window.

Must have had something to do with them Warning on the 2nd Quarter.

1/23 16:30 AAPL sees Q2 $0.94 vs $1.09 First Call consensus; sees revs $6.8 bln vs $6.98 bln First Call consensus

Not that anything like that matters. It's important for everyone to just feel good.

That way the future won't matter.

I like Apple, love their products, but even they may not be immune to the wreck that is the joke of an Economy we have right now.

I see Apple as good but expensive products. The general public will choose low priced (and crappy build quality) Dells etc over a mac if they are strapped for cash.

Buy with both fists.

You are definitely not someone I would ever consider a fool, but you can still be parted with your money.

Traditionally, when AAPL enters a Bear Market, it usually washes out like the tide.

From these levels, it could go all the way to 40-44 area which would be about a 68% drop.

Another Bubble that has burst.

But you are correct that it will go back up.

But I wouldn't jump in at these levels. Not at all.

I know a fairly nimble trader, quite good at what he does, that bought in at $202.00

This morning, he is asking the same thing Socrates asked.

"I Drank What?"

32. Manufacturing is done overseas. Engineering, marketing, etc. is done in the U.S.
Apple operates a huge campus at 1 Infinite Loop Drive,
Cupertino, CA; go to Google Earth if you want to see it.

They also employ others scattered across the United States.
