Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Heath Ledger Funeral

Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas has announced their plans to picket at Heath Ledger’s funeral because the actor “promoted homosexuality” by his film ‘Brokeback Mountain’ in which he played a gay man.

Fred Phelps leads the church, which demostrates their strong conviction against gays, lesbians and soldiers by picketing. The Topeka, Kansas based group has made headlines in the past after picketing at the funeral’s of soldiers carrying signs reading ‘Thank God for Dead Soldiers’ and ‘God Hates Fags.’



“God hates the, tacky bucket of slime seasoned with womit known as Brokeback Mountain and he hates all persons having anything whatsoever to do with it,” the church writes on a flyer.

Not too worried. Unlike most people, the Ledger family can afford or arrange good security. They can also make sure that the arrangements are kept quiet.

But it's outrageous that this freak show has made this announcement at this sad time.

Protesting the Maryland funeral of four children and their mother, who were killed by a drunk driver in Ohio earlier this month.

Apparently, these Westboro wack-jobs attempt to goad people into physically assaulting them, so that they can then sue them for $$$ in court.

the Maryland family's death was God's way at getting back at the state of Maryland for its court's decision that went against Westboro Baptist Church. You know, I'm not Christian, but I would think that a supposedly omnipotent deity would find some better, bigger and more on point way of punishing a state for a court decision that he/she/it didn't like than arranging for a family to get killed by a drunk driver while driving out-of-state.

If it's as small as I think it is, why does the media continue to dignify the group with the name of "church"? I know, I know, it's their name, but that doesn't mean the media can't more correctly identify them as a "cult" or simply "family" -- like Manson Family.

There whereabouts and plans should mainly be of interest to local cops, so the cops can warn the bereaved. Possibly the cops could implement one of the Homeland's ideas and lead the Phelps Cult to a Free Speech Zone a mile from the funeral.

Family members by marriage or blood. Explains a few things, doesn't it? And yes, as a true Christian, (ain't perfect but doing the best I can), I would completely agree that this is the worst type of inbred, incestuous cults who family tree DOES NOT BRANCH.

The Phelps Cult has about as much to do with the teachings of that nice Jewish boy as the Spanish Inquisition did. They are both batshit and crazy -- fortunately for the rest of humanity the Phelpses have no power except the power to disgust.

As for the rest of the Christian community, I take'em as they come and appreciate any efforts at Ecumenicism and hands across the aisle. Progressive causes in this country have always benefitted from the efforts of Christians fired up with the desire to do good.

My Mom H-A-T-E-D the hypocrisy she saw in the black Baptist church. So, she made a decision early on to bring us up without denomination. "Why", she would say, "Do you have to join a church and undergo indoctrination? The fact that you believe should be enough." AND as far as I'm concerned, that's the way it should be. 'Ism's has always been at the core of the problem, ie, the manmade crap, based on someone's hangups and prejudices. The only way to honestly worship, IMHO, is to live and let live, love your neighbor, regardless of colour, creed, stripe, etc and practice what Christ was really about and that is basically this: if you truly love God and follow his tenets,ie, don't steal, commit murder, lie, covet but most importantly, remember that your neighbor, whether that person is the member of your country club, (if that's your thing) or a poor homeless and hungry person on the street is equal in God's eyes and is worthy of caring and love.

That's all it's really about in a nutshell. I cannot believe that these Phelps nuts can so easily forget the part in the Good Book where it VERY CLEARLY STATES: "Judge not, lest ye be judged. For as ye judge, so shall ye be judged."

The way we believe , the Phelps should be worried about a long stay being arranged in a VERY warm and toasty place. They don;t look the tropical type to me.

Where do they get the money? They certainly don't look capable of holding very high paying jobs. And how are they able to get enough time off from the jobs they do have?

(Some of you have seen me recommend this before, and I apologize. But I post it when I see a Phelps thread.)

The Most Hated Family In America. BBC correspondent Louis Theroux spent 6 weeks living with the Phelps family. Having them covered by a British reporter was an excellent idea. Theroux could be very objective, since he didn't know all that much about them to start with.

Westboro Baptist, as others have noted, almost exclusively consists of the Phelpses and their spouses and kids. Fred Phelps has 13 children, but some of them have left the family. Like any cult, the remaining family members have cut off all contact with the ones who left--flesh and blood or not.

Phelps is a bombastic egomaniac who seems to think he's just about the smartest guy in the world. When we first see him, he's taping a sermon and ranting about Billy Graham going to hell.

He absolutely refuses to co-operate with Theroux, and treats him with complete condescension. e.g., making fun of the questions he asks and complaining that Theroux won't ask about his real message. (His real message is "God hates fags," which pretty much sums up his whole theology and doesn't leave a lot of need for exegesis, I would think.)

There is one sort of poignant moment, when Theroux is alone with Fred's 21-yr-old grand-daughter. He asks if she ever thought about leaving the family and having a normal life.

She says the family started picketing funerals 15 years ago, when she was in First Grade, so this is pretty much the only life she knows and she never thought about leaving. She adds something like: "So ever since I was 6 years old, I've been hated."

The family also brings their very small children out to the pickets, which is not only stupid but dangerous. In the documentary, one of the smallest boys gets hit in head with a bottle thrown from a passing car.

Their eyes had that psychotic twinkle and a perpetual grin that is only seen on the most truly emotional disturbed. They kept that grin throughout the pronouncement to the reporter that he was on his way to hell. It was about 2 inches beyond complete psychosis, so help me God.

Their eyes glinted like they were suffering from a serious and malignant fever. It was a trip.

They should give the Phelps Phucks the welcome that they so richly deserve. Have all of the security look like a casting call for "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."
