Kucinich Starts New Impeachment Drive (against Bush on Jan. 28 {SOTU} )
Source: NY Times

Representative Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio may get excluded from Democratic presidential debates, as he has been recently, but no one can deny him the floor in the House.

And today Mr. Kucinich took to the floor to fire off his latest salvo at the Bush administration: his plans to introduce Articles of Impeachment against President Bush on Jan. 28 — the day of Mr. Bush’s State of the Union speech.

Accusing the administration of lying about the need for the war in Iraq, Mr. Kucinich said he did not need to hear the president’s
assessment. “We know the State of the Union,” he declared. “It’s a lie.”

He also fired a volley at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California
who has maintained that impeaching Mr. Bush is not on the table for Congressional Democrats. “If impeachment is off the table,” Mr. Kucinich said, “truth is off the table. If truth is off the table
then this body is living a lie.”

Mr. Kucinich introduced Articles of Impeachment against Vice
President Dick Cheney last April and in November, with the surprise help of Republicans seeking to embarrass the Democrats, he nearly succeeded in securing an hour of debate on the House floor. House Democratic leaders blocked that, however, by referring the impeachment effort back to the Judiciary Committee.

anybody know if members can be heard by the chair during the SOTU session?

is it unprecedented?

Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 03:24 PM by onenote
Individual members of the House (or Senate) cannot be heard during a joint session called for the State of the Union address. Joint sessions in generalare called pursuant to concurrent resolutions of the Senate and House and the one for the SOTU provides that the purpose of the session is to receive "such communication as the President of the United States shall be pleased to make to them." A joint session is not the same as a session of either house and the rules applicable to a session of the House or of the Senate are not applicable.

22. but during electoral vote counting
members of the house can rise and be heard as Rep Tubbs Jones was after the 04 vote. That is also a joint session. What is the difference?

23. not exactly
There are specfic rules governing the joint session under which electoral votes are counted. Under the rules, if both a member of the House and a member of the Senate raise an objection with regard to the counting of the votes, the joint session is suspended and the two houses meet separately to consider the objection. Tubbs' objection, joined by Senator Boxer, came in the form of a letter that was read during the joint session, at which time the joint session was suspended.

In 2000, you may recall, there was an attempt by various members of the House to object to the Florida vote, but those efforts to be heard were gavelled down because no member of the Senate joined in.

Rep. Kucinich creates commotion in House with call for impeaching President Bush

Created: 1/23/2008 2:54:10 PM
Updated:1/23/2008 3:03:30 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich may get excluded from democratic presidential debates, but he?s voicing his opinion on the House floor.
On Wednesday, Kucinich announced he'll be filing articles of impeachment against President Bush on Monday.

That?s the same day of the president's state of the union address.

The announcement comes as Kucinich railed the President and Vice President for how they have handled the war in Iraq.

In his lengthy statement, the Ohio congressman said, "The President and Vice President lied and 4,000 of our soldiers died. The President and Vice President lied and a million innocent Iraqis died in a war that'll cost us two trillion dollars while people here in the states are losing their jobs, their health care, their homes, their dignity. Lies are weapons of mass destruction. Lies are also an impeachable offense. Monday, January 28th is the State of the Union. We already know the State of the Union, it's a lie."...

13. Kudos to Dennis!
What he is doing reminds me of what Congressman John Quincy Adams did in the House in the 1840s. He stood up for the Constitutional right of petition, and never backed down. At the time people called him "nuts", but now his stand is regarded as a courageous and necessary one.

Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 08:18 PM by idiocracyhell
and the only candidate my conscience will allow me to support. John Adams and John Quincy Adams are my ancestors. In supporting Dennis Kucinich, the greatest defender of our Constitution, I feel as though I'm honoring my country and my ancestors. Our Constitution is hanging by a thread, and we need a man of integrity, courage, and perseverance fighting the corporate takeover of our democracy. The people that are calling Kucinich "nuts" will rue the day they didn't support this great man of uncompromising integrity.

John Adams and John Quincy Adams are also in my family tree, though not as direct ancestors (their father is an uncle to me). Kucinich is, by far, the most honorable and thoughtful of all the candidates running, imho.

63. What a small world!
My line comes from John Alden. My daughter just finished a school report on her ancestors and chose John Alden. I told her John Adams and John Quincy Adams were also our ancestors through Ruth Alden, but she was bummed after seeing Marilyn Monroe was also an Alden descendant, but from a different daughter than our line. She was looking for a way to spin it so she could do a report on Marilyn Monroe as our direct ancestor. A movie star is much more glamorous to a teenage girl I guess.

You're right, Kucinich is by far the most honorable and thoughtful candidate. Great minds must run in our DNA cuz.:toast:

106. Do you think it is in the DNA?
I'm the French Connection. My ancestor a Huegonaut, came here as secretary to Lord Edward Hyde, NY Gov. who tried to frame him by embezzling funds and blaming my ancestor. His integrity however was widely known and he was absolved, Hyde, Lord of Cornwall, was recalled to England by his cousin Queene Ann, for his misbehavior. He( Hyde , not my ancestor,)ALSO liked to dress in women's clothes; hello Rudi! IS it the water in NY City?
I feel as if family members have been pitted against these "greedy ones," for 3 centuries.
Can't we all just rebell & get Kucinich elected with write-in votes?

15. Yes, the truth will set us free.
I heard that somewhere. I'd like to think it is the truth.

Let's see. It it is true, then the truth truly will set us free.

If it is false, then the truth won't set us free.

Guess we'll have to wait and test it to see which way it goes.

But, anyway, thanks to Kucinich.

35. This is the first State of the Union Address I've been looking forward to seeing!
What lies will come!? What tainted twists of logic and language could possible allow any president to state at this date "The state of the Union is Sound (or good or even ehh not so bad)

I can't wait.

The liar of the century. The man who speaks with the barest grasp of our native tongue, who has been responsible for bring into reality the nightmare of Orwellian double speak, must now explain the economic disaster he and his policies have brought about.

Oh, don't get me wrong. It's not that I am waiting for redemption. Hoping and believing that he will finally have to face the truth of his lies and the reality of the day and the year. It is not that I even dream that he may have some words of comfort or GOD FORBID wisdom that might help at this time.

Nor do I believe that there will be a collective AHA we GOT YA! moment and the world and the country will finally see the liar that he is and the mess he has landed us in.

No. He will spin his usual web of fairy tails and those that want to believe will do so, and those who are ready to grow up, will.

The interesting part will be seeing him in his farewell state of the union and to see how he will be received. The totally lame, totally unwanted, dare I say rabid duck that he is.

And if he is well received, by these standards, then why? What is going on? Is Prozac being dumped into the fancy water pitchers there on capital hill? Or have they just all gone crazy?

Kucinich does his homework, thinks things through, & most of all has integrity!

I can't say that about the others running for Prez. My wish is that whoever IS elected will make HIM Speaker of the House.

He has already been forced out of the Prez race by exclusion--both time-wise in the debates they actually allowed him to attend & by the MSM painting him: an elf, UFO crazy, Ole' codger w/hot wife half his age, & all-round radical.

I doubt HRC would support him as Speaker, not sure about Obama & Edwards.

But I do love him!!! I love him w/my $ & my vote!:loveya:

He's the only one who wants to hold the criminals in charge accountable.

Mr Kucinich, when you're at it, don't just focus on Iraq. 65. BUT - what about the "forced" retraction????
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 11:21 PM by Journalgrrl
I too, believe that EVERYONE in the COUNTRY knows these guys are lyin SOB's...

So what's with the forced retraction? and why did the (repug) senator call it a personal atack?

I am still new to this, but I want to understand how Kucinich was violating House rules?

Does he still get to file his articles of Impeachment? and if they "poo-poo" him off the House floor...well then isn't this entire government just a travesty? And how scary that truly IS...when I tell my teenager that these people are the ones who run our lives... that freedom is only an illusion.

I want SOOO much to believe in something like the government I was taught about in school and that the critical thinking I learned about in college is at work in our Government (and ALL OF US)...and then I see that those with a real voice are silenced by those who would bully us all into abject poverty and enslave us to our TV's...

hmmmm...consumerism has become the opiate of the masses, eh?

71. Well, if the shoe FITS...
I understand, so it's okay for trillions of dollars, lives and America's standing in the world is Lost... but a Senator can't call a spade a spade? Which sucks, because really the elected ones are those who really make things "happen" in that crazy place called Washington.

Does anyone here think the Articles of Impeachment will stick?
And even IF he is impeached, (which honestly, we don't have the money for that kind of trial...) what can we do to him? just remove him from office as he is about to leave (how bout a swift kick to hurry him along? lol)

Can we actually have him pay reparations to the American people for screwing us so bad? how about Cheney and Haliburton? I'd like their "retirement" to be what funds our "rebate"!!!

75. I rather suspect Dennis made his remarks in the spirit of a hostage...
...who makes a public statement on television that he is being well treated by his captors, while managing a little twitch of the eye for the camera.

Dennis knows what the rules say, but if there's anything we desperately need in this country right now it's someone who breaks "the rules" in favor of truth and justice. Especially "the rules" that have come into play as the result of signing statements.

When a judge strikes something from the record in a courtroom, the jury has heard the "offending" words, and no human can strike a comment from memory. Yes, they're instructed to ignore certain passages, but the horse is out of the barn already.

Rave on, McKucinich!

80. If Pelosi doesn't have the courage...

...then perhaps it is time to point out that her lofty
position is by no means guaranteed, and that the same voters
who enabled her to assume it roughly a year ago, are the same
voters who can remove her from it if she fails to exercise it properly.

I think it's becoming increasingly clear that she is a major
impediment to impeachment proceedings -- proceedings that must
commence in order to save what's left of our constitution.
I therefore think it's time to issue an ultimatum: either she
fully supports impeachment, starting immediately, or she will
be targeted for political destruction (no matter what the cost)
in the next election. If we need to make an example out of someone
in order to show that political cowardice is unacceptable, then stripping
her of power and ending her career is an option that IS on the table.

We did not give Democrats a resounding victory in 2006 so
that they could just continue the status quo. They would do well
to remember this -- before it becomes necessary for us to make some
of them object lessons to the others.

111. Bittersweet
It's great, and cathartic, to see Bush and Co. called out so publicly-- but I have to wonder about its utility. The Democratic Party's strategy, right or wrong, seems to be to stay somewhat positive, to stay true to their pre-victory pledge to "get things done" by ceasing "partisan wrangling". Obviously the Fox News gang misses no opportunity to accuse Democrats of failing to live up to their rhetoric. This places most Congressional Democrats in an uneasy position when motions such as this one are introduced. The fact that Bush, Cheney, et. al. are quite obviously guilty of the most egregious "high crimes and misdemeanors" does not really overcome the other fact that at this point in time it is a strategic impossibility to move impeachment proceedings culminating in a Senate conviction all the way through both houses of Congress. The best we can angle for is to re-take the White House and significantly increase our majorities in Congress, so that full and unimpeded investigations can take place under the new Administration, finally culminating, we can hope, in the censure of the no-longer-sitting President and the passage of laws to prevent future Administrations from repeating his behavior. Forcing Democratic Representatives to take positions now on this issue seems potentially damaging to that effort in two respects:
1) It undermines the narrative of a co-operative bipartisan legislation period from 2006-2008, which the DCC is pursuing toward gains in the 2008 elections-- potentially limiting those gains, which are crucial.
2) It diminishes the traction that future Democratic arguments can have during those investigations-- key leaders will have already established a record of not supporting impeachment, and the notion thereof will seem to have already been discredited to much of the electorate.
Basically, I love what Kucinich has done, except I wish he hadn't done it.

116. put your helmets on and.......

Red, Blue, Purple, what ever color they paint you,
aren't we all Democrats?

Aren't we all tired of the NeoCons getting away with their crimes?

Aren't we all tired of our government officials doing nothing about it?
What would you do if they did?

Congressman Dennis Kucinich has the balls to stand up
and be heard, do you? Let's get behind his courage, NOW!!!

It's time to hold them accountable. You DO make a difference.
Over 200,000 American citizens have supported Congressman
Wexler and others who are trying to act. But they are being blocked
by the committee chairman and cannot proceed without more
pressure from us.

I hope all of you who have been so vocal about this administration
will help us get these hearings moving. Without our support, our
Congress can do nothing.

Take two minutes and sign this petition that has been started to
pressure Congressman Nadle, who, along with Nancy Pelosi,
are the reason that nothing is moving forward.
If you want change, don't expect others to provide it for you.
You must get involved, and it needs to happen NOW!

Please sign the petition and repost this information.
Before it's too late, and that will be tomorrow.
Get with it, people. The apathy and complaining is pathetic.
Time to step out of your comfort zone before it no longer exists.

Go Here:http://asknadler2impeach.org/ Resume Impeachment Proceedings Now

Stop the GOP from blocking Cheney impeachment hearings trying to move forward in Congress.

You do have a voice, use it.
