Bush may veto spy measure extension: spokesman
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush will veto a 30-day extension of a controversial spying program due to expire February 1, the White House said Tuesday, after months of calling the effort vital to US security.

"We would veto a 30-day extension," said spokesman Tony Fratto. "What we want to do is make the law permanent."

Bush's Democratic foes, who control the US Congress, say the extension will ensure that there is no "intelligence gap" while lawmakers reconcile rival Senate and House versions of legislation to make the initiative permanent.

"What's important for the intelligence community is that they have certainty in the law in order to put in place their programs," said Fratto. "We don't need a patchwork of extensions; what we need is to get this bill passed."

1. Good. Let him.
And, then let him explain to the American people why he wouldn't sign it---because it lets telecoms off the hook for their illegal activities.

And, Dems, you had better damn well be ready to go to the mat on this one. Do not cave in to Little Lord Pissypants.

3. The question now then is
will the congressional dems fall for this yet again, the 'they put America at risk' line or do they stand up together and put the blame right back on him where it belongs.

8. As I understand it
its not really extend it or nothing situation, if it doesn't get extended then they revert back to the original law which doesn't include some of the things Bu$hCo wants. So let him cut his nose off to spite his face.

6. Attention Congress critters,
repeat after me.

"We passed a measure in good faith, but the president chose to veto it. If the thirty day extension isn't good enough for him, then he'll have to wait for the final measure."

10. You know after reading
"We would veto a 30-day extension," said spokesman Tony Fratto. "What we want to do is make the law permanent." I cant help but shake my head in wonder, after all I thought we defeated the nazis in world war 2 but I guess I was mistaken.

11. The dems must feel constant pressure from us. We are the ones who
can stop this travesty. If we do not constantly phone, e-mail, fax, the telecons will get away with literal murder. It is up to us. Enough bad karma and the dems MAY listen; otherwise the whole bunch of junk yard dogs get off scotch free. (My sincere apology to the pathetic and abused animal, the junkyard dog,)
