BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Argentina's defense minister barred two retired admirals and a former navy captain from teaching and consulting posts for the military Tuesday, citing possible ties to or sympathies with past human rights abuses.

Nilda Garre announced the disciplinary moves against retired Admirals Roberto Pertussio and Miguel Troitinio and retired Capt. Hugo Santillan.

Pertussio, who recently taught at a naval think tank, is being investigated by a judge probing crimes committed during the 1976-83 military dictatorship, the communique said.

It said Troitino was barred from military teaching or advisory posts for allegedly backing the past dictatorship and its "actions of state terrorism," though it did not specify his actions.

It said Santillan was barred from a top post at a military training school for publicly criticizing the government's conversion of the former Navy Mechanics' School - once a notorious torture center - into a museum honoring thousands of dictatorship-era victims.

Some 5,000 political prisoners passed through the school in chains, many never to be seen again. Officially nearly 13,000 people are reported missing or dead from a dictatorship crackdown known as the Dirty War, though activists put the toll near 30,000.
