Tribe All but Vanishes From Kenyan City

Jan 30, 3:56 PM (ET)

By KATHARINE HOURELD

KISUMU, Kenya (AP) - The young man hefting a machete at the burning roadblock was frustrated. He'd been looking for five days, but could not find a member of the Kikuyu tribe to kill.

Members of Kenya's biggest tribe have disappeared in their thousands from Kisumu, making it the first - but perhaps not the last - city to be ethnically cleansed.

"If we find any Kikuyus, we're going to slaughter them or burn them alive," 19-year-old Daniel Odongo said Wednesday, who wielded the machete as a mob of hundreds of young men with rusty axes and other weapons roared their approval. "But there is none in the houses around here."

.......

The residents, mainly from the Luo tribe of opposition leader Raila Odinga, soon turned their rage on Kibaki's Kikuyu people - a minority in the western city resented for their domination of politics and the economy. They set Kikuyu homes on fire and ordered them to leave, or face death.

........

Now only about 150 Kikuyus remain, camping miserably opposite the police station for protection. No buses have been escorted out since Jan. 13, although murderous young men still stop vehicles searching for victims.

5. They were the victims of the Mau Mau many years ago.
I was there when Tom Mboya, a Luo was assassinated. There was a small Mau Mau uprising when I was there. I remember a priest was killed and hung from a post I had been using as a back rest as I was hitchhiking from Nairobi to Mombasa. The incident happened a few hours after I had left the spot.

I shudder when I think about standing out in the middle of the Serengeti, unarmed, for hours waiting for a ride.

11. to be fair, some of those handshakes contribute to countless deaths
be it through war profiteering, industrial pollution, weakening of the healtcare system, what have you. Our veil of invulnerability that America would never turn to such tactics outright is thin; we are a few flimsy institutions and cultural conditions away from our own next Civil War. :scared:

9. As unsettling a story this is...
It's interesting that these disenfranchised people are looking to exact revenge upon the perpetrators.

"The residents, mainly from the Luo tribe of opposition leader Raila Odinga, soon turned their rage on Kibaki's Kikuyu people - a minority in the western city resented for their domination of politics and the economy."

We here in the U.S. like to talk idly of a "revolution", but never truly understand what that means.

This civil war/revolution going on in Kenya is exactly what a civil war/ revolution looks like when the people have had enough and decide to take "justice" into their own hands.

Granted, I'm sure that many of the minority Kikuyu people aren't all bastards or evil people, but sadly, even innocent and the poorest of the poor will get lumped in with evil and the richest of the rich when it comes to ethnic cleaning.

To me it sounds as if Kenya is going through it's own version of "the reign of terror".

When the majority of the population are oppressed by a minority for years on end, bad things happen, eventually.

We humans never learn.
