BBC (Thursday): Election plan for Iraq attacked
From the BBC Online
Dated Thursday January 15 21:49 (1:49 pm PST)

Election plan for Iraq attacked

A top Iraqi Shia cleric has written to the US president and UK prime minister questioning their sincerity over the transfer of power to the Iraqis.
In his letter, Hojat Al-Islam Ali Abdulhakim Alsafi said the political transition plan had more to do with US elections than Iraqi interests.
He warned of the consequences of ignoring Iraqi demands.
The letter came as tens of thousands of Iraqis demonstrated in the southern city of Basra.
Protesters called for the country's new authorities to be chosen in direct elections, not selected indirectly as the US proposes.

4. They'll really be pissed

when they find out W has fixed the election. I wonder if those Iraqis are aware of books like the best-selling Stupid White Men, about how W did just that in Florida.

6. From the NY Times article tonight:
"After weeks of quiet overtures and secret letters to Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, administration officials say they are baffled over exactly what he wants -- and even more confused about what it will take to get him to back off his demand for direct elections. "

I took this to mean that US officials are absolutely floored by the very idea that Sistani might not be maneuvering for a bribe.
