Florida's Harris may skip Senate run
Congresswoman will not seek the seat held by Bob Graham, GOP leaders say

By John Kennedy | Tallahassee Bureau
Posted January 16, 2004

TALLAHASSEE -- Katherine Harris is expected to announce today that she will not run for U.S. Senate, key Republican leaders told the Orlando Sentinel Thursday night.

After weeks of speculation about her political future, Harris apparently has decided to stay out of the crowded GOP primary field, although at least one party source conceded that she could change her mind.

As part of what were described as "delicate" discussions with GOP leaders, Harris will instead seek a second term in the U.S. House and likely will run for the seat now held by Florida Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2006.

Harris herself was saying little.

16. Ugly? I think she's pretty foxy in this picture.

Don't get me wrong, I think Katherine Harris is a harpie spat from the mouth of hell. But I'm a heterosexual guy before I'm a Democrat, and I don't think she's that hard to look at.

The stirrups appear to be too long - then again what do I know? I will admit that the body does look too bad. But fuck, I'm a 70 y/o man and anything looks pretty good compared to the old hens.

4. Harris got some strong advice from WH
Her in ANY race will be a lightening rod for the GOP, and will dredge up every vote-stealing story all across America. She is the wrong candidate at the wrong time, and I'd bet you anything she was told in no uncertain terms to stay the hell out of this race for the good of Chimpy and Der Party.

14. They offered to make her the principal scapegoat...
The Bushistas know what she did. They probably (you can scratch out the qualifier if you'd like) told her to do it.

If Ms. Harris enters the Senate race, they were completely prepared to admit (1) that the Bush campaign stole Florida and (2) it was all her fault. She did it all! Send her up the river, right now! We know we didn't take Florida, but Katherine Harris rigged the ballots. She stopped the vote counts. She's completely responsible for putting Chimpy in the White House!

And because Bush has invaded all of those countries and had all of those people killed, she can be tried for 15,500 counts of Accessory to Homicide. Ya think 15,500 counts of Accessory to Homicide is enough to get her strapped to a gurney?

10. Can we see the bruises where they twisted her arm?
Because this lady believes they OWE her the Senate.

Why, her testimony alone would lead directly to impeachment, do not pass go, do not collect millions for re-election, go directly to jail.

13. They made her some nice promises
and told her to sit this one out. Martinez is the annointed one.
Waiting also gets her farther away from the 2000 fiasco.

FYI: The Repub base love her. Get her autograph, get their pictures taken with her.

20. Unfortunately, this is good for Bush AND Harris.
They want her to run mid-term in 2006. Why? Because her visibility during a presidential election would be bad, bad, bad for Republicans. It would risk bringing back all those repressed memories about how Bush was not elected. Mid-term means she brings no such baggage to Bush.

24. It's official
Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fla.), best known for her role in the 2000 Florida recount, announced today that she would run for re-election to her seat in House, forgoing a shot at the open Senate seat vacated by retiring Sen. Bob Graham (D).

In a press conference in her central Florida district, Harris said the decision was a difficult one. But in the end, she said, she wanted to serve another term as representative of her Sarasota-area constituency.

Harris’ announcement fueled speculation that she intends to run for Senate in 2006 against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who is in his first term. “I am here to announce that I am going to be a candidate for the United States Senate—but not this year,” the freshman congresswoman said.

>snip<

Harris has become one of the GOP’s star fundraisers, and the Republican House leadership and fundraising arm lobbied her to remain in the House. While some Republicans believed a Harris Senate run would galvanize Florida Democrats and hurt President Bush’s chance in the key state, others encouraged her to run, making her decision a tough one, she said.<

Probably went something like this - Stand back because we're going to pour $$$ and backing behind Martinez, and wipe up the floor with your sorry old self if you decide to run this year. Wait until 2006 and run with our blessings for Senator Nelson's seat.
