Mellencamp Songs Off McCain's Playlist
Source: AP

PHOENIX (AP) — It may be "Our Country," but it's John Mellencamp's song.

When the liberal rocker found out his songs were being played at events for Republican John McCain's presidential campaign, Mellencamp's publicist sent a letter that questioned the campaign's playlist.

"Are you sure you want to use his music to promote Senator McCain's efforts?" according to the letter sent to McCain's campaign on Monday. "Logic says that the facts might prove to be an embarrassment, were they to be circulated widely."

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers in Washington, D.C., said Thursday that the songs would no longer be played. He declined to elaborate.

The letter explained Mellencamp was a liberal who had supported Democrat John Edwards, who recently dropped out of the race.

1. After the campaign went to all that trouble to rewrite the lyrics as "Ain't Even Done With The Nap"

2. And how about "Little Drowned Houses"
that reminisces about john and george's excellent adventure with the nice cake while Hurricane Katrina was bringing New Orleans to its knees?

4. Um, hey, McCain idiots; a liberal wrote that song:
"Our Country"

Written by John Mellencamp

Well I can stand beside
Ideals I think are right
And I can stand beside
The idea to stand and fight
I do believe
There’s a dream for everyone
This is our country

There’s room enough here
For science to live
And there’s room enough here
For religion to forgive
And try to understand
All the people of this land

This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

That poverty could be
Just another ugly thing
And bigotry would be
Seen only as obscene
And the ones that run this land
Help the poor and common man

This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

The dream is still alive
Some day it will come true
And this country it belongs
To folks like me and you
So let the voice of freedom
Sing out through this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

6. The guy who chose that song probably only heard it when
it was used for a "pick-em-up truck" commercial. Chevy, if I'm not mistaken.

7. I think Mellencamp made a mistake
He should have let McCain keep playing those songs. Eventually the "subversive" lyrics would have sunk into even the densest of repub skulls and more right wing voters would've turned against McCain.

8. I dunno. They're not so good at nuance.
I recall how astonished I was to hear Springsteen's "Born in the USA" as background music for a July 4th fireworks extravaganza. The crowd continued mindlessly cheering all the pretty explosions.

9. Something similar happened in the '80s.

Didn't St. Ronnie want to use "Born in the USA" as a campaign song, & Bruce Springsteen refused? Apparently no one in the Reagan camp listened to the lyrics!

13. Mellencamp is an American treasure ....
I never liked him growing up .... He was 'too plain' ....

I recognize him now for being honest to his roots, and a considerate poet for the masses ....

I love John Mellencamp ....
