Bush to Offer Defense of Iraq War in Major Speech
Bush to Offer Defense of Iraq War in Major Speech
31 minutes ago

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites), in an election-year State of the Union speech next week, will offer a strong defense of the Iraq (news - web sites) war and seek to assure the American people that his tax cuts are restoring job growth to the U.S. economy, White House officials said on Friday.

On Tuesday night Bush will address a joint session of the U.S. Congress and millions of Americans watching on television -- a big opportunity to command attention with a review of his plans and priorities as he gears up for his re-election drive.

Faced with Democratic criticism that he led America into the war in Iraq on faulty assumptions about its alleged weapons of mass destruction, Bush will say the war liberated millions from Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s rule and now offers a chance to bring democracy to the heart of the Middle East.

He will stand by his decisions on Iraq and say they were the right ones, a senior administration official said. "He'll be very clear to the American people about the reasoning behind it and how it's making a critically important part of the world more secure and safer."

1. dems need to be as agressive..like Kennedy the other day
The Democratic leader in the House of Representatives said Bush must explain how he plans to restore America's standing in the world after a "war of choice" that angered allies, making the United States pay much of the cost of rebuilding Iraq.

"At every stage of this endeavor, the president's policy toward Iraq has been marked by confusion and uncertainty," said Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California.

The man was an evil, evil-doer who was a WMD himself that murdered millions of his own people and the Iraqi people, the American people, the people of the world….even the people of Mexico are safer with that varmint under wraps…..in between, there will be copious amounts of 911, war-on-terra, freedom and democracy….not to mention a smirk or two while emulating a bobbing chicken head.

47. Just this one statement, alone, tells all.
"he'll be very clear to the American people about the reasoning behind (the Iraq invasion)."

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy...

This long after the fact, and the even-longer run-up, and he's STILL trying to justify his war. STILL TRYING TO JUSTIFY HIS WAR. Y'know, we all should have been absolutely clear, from the get-go, about this war. Should we really still be scrambling around like an idiot, trying to explain why we're there?

If he's as "clear" as he has been, it won't be pretty, or effective, or win many people over.

13. He's going to get up there an lie again, over and over
Edited on Fri Jan-16-04 07:21 PM by Marianne
and the Democrats will sit there and applaud.

He will lie again about the sanctity of killing thousands of people, inoocent people, that he shocked and awed, and the Democrats will just sit there and applaud.

He will pretend to be the big leader, and the Democrats will sit there and applaud.

He will lay out how wonderful he is in another big lie, and the Democrats willjust sit there an applaud

Further, there are other Democrats who will defend that non action. It is necessary to sit there and applaud, they will say, because if they do not, they will turn off voters. And that is totally incongruous--they are actually aiding and abetting the fascist Bush by being this scared of him and by tippy toeing around believing that voters like, actually like, a passive, wimpy, scared of Bush, party.

They will sit there and applaud--the frump will be up in the balcony, wearing the latest in outrageous looking upholstry, Joker smiling at anything, even at space, and wide clapping like a frigging seal again.

and the reports will be so very, very complimentary to Bush, again.

He will be pundited as "bold" as a "visionary" as a successful "war time president"

This country has gone to crap.

40. I don't like it myself
but every once in a while it is necessary to face reality, brutally.

I do not want to watch the idiot lying about the state of the union and patting himself on the back for murdering thousands of people, but I think I must just in order to be able to knock the hell out of him and what he says. Further, to compare what the pundits or anyone, will be saying , and to compare it to last year.

May he stumble badly--in clear view of millions of people who will be watching. May he stutter and stammer , turn white and fail to hear the voice in his ear or see the teleprompter in front of him. May he get stage fright and try to improvise and say something typically stupid.

My thoughts exactly....No need to watch this shit...it will be a repeat of the State of the Union. A bunch of chickenshit Dems...nodding their heads and clapping like a pack of eager Lemmings while Bush insults their constituancy with the same old lies.

Dems clapping during Bushs Rationalization of Ends Justifying My Lies Address will be an affirmation that he is indeed the right man for the job.....and one more affirmation that I made the right decision in going independant. After all, clapping ones hands for a Lier is showing respect for his methods...and if Dems support these methods, of what use are they to me?

Just another disenfranchized pissed off Ex Democrat,

...lists of quantities of chem & bio WMDs
...failure of UN in finding WMDs

28. What we do in Iraq IS part of the future
We are now stuck between a rock and a hard place because of the invasion of Iraq. We need to push the point that we didn't even have to go there in the first place because of LIES, and that every death there is a direct result of those LIES. And we need to push the point that the Bush administration is still pushing these LIES to get support for possible military action against other countries (hello Syria).

BTW, I'd love to see an up-to-date source where it says 40% of Democrats are currently in favor of the war. I have a hard time swallowing that.

Hey listen...No offense, but....maybe you should GET OFF DU!!!! if you think we should stop talking about the War. The more we talk about it, the more people will wake up to the fact that they were lied to. The only reason why there's anybody still in support of the war is because either a) they're uneducated about the reasons for instigating it, or b) they're evil thugs who enjoy the thought of slaughtering brown people. DU is not the place to defend Bush's murderous policies.

How come all of your posts are "devil's advocate" type posts? Do you REALLY think the Devil needs ANOTHER advocate?

38. and here is what will happen during his goddamn lying speech

Military Families Hold Candle Light Vigil at the U.S. Capitol During State of Union Address

‘Remembering Lives Lost to a Lie’

WASHINGTON, DC - On January 20, during the State of the Union address, Military Families Speak Out – supported by Veterans for Peace, other peace groups and faith communities in the Washington, D.C. area – will mount a powerful, respectful remembrance of 500 American soldiers who have died in Iraq, together with penitential prayer for them and the estimated 9,000 Iraqi civilians who have died in the war and the chaos that followed.

WHO: Military Families, Veterans, Peace activists and others

WHAT: Candle light Vigil and remembrance of American and Iraqi lives lost in Iraq war

WHEN: 7:30pm - 9:30pm Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004

WHERE: 3rd Street NW between Constitution and Independence Avenues

At last year’s State of the Union President Bush deliberately frightened the American people and rushed the nation to war on the basis of these now-famous “16 words” that, at that time they were spoken, were known by the Administration to be false:

“The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”

Soldiers were sent to war on the basis of this lie and others told about weapons of mass destruction. American soldiers and Iraqi innocents died because of such lies.

Very soon the “official” 500th American soldier will die by hostile fire in Iraq. More than 500 have already died if accidents and suicide are counted. Credible estimates of Iraqi civilians killed are put between 8,000 and 10,000, both as a direct result of the war and because of the whirlwind of violence and insecurity that followed and continues to this day. Since the last State of the Union, our nation has been diminished by the loss of all these precious lives.

Therefore, beginning at 7:30 PM on January 20, demonstrators will form a human chain of remembrance stretching along 3rd Street NW between Constitution and Independence Avenues. Each person will bear the name of a soldier who died in Iraq and hold a candle to symbolize the light of that person’s life. Along the line will be persons bearing the names of Iraqi civilians as well. We will bear witness to these lost lives as the President and VIPs pass by in their dark vehicles on the way to the Capitol.

At the very moment that President Bush begins his State of the Union speech, a banner with the “16 words” will begin a death march down the line of lights. As it moves, a drum will sound and the people will call out the name of each fallen soldier, stating their rank, full name, branch of service and age at death. Iraqi names will be remembered and called out. The candle will then be extinguished to symbolize that President Bush’s words brought death to this person and cast a pall of darkness over the nation.

50. Wrong
There is no defense. And no matter how bad his supporters want to convince you otherwise, you cannot make a legitimate case for this war no easier than you can make the case 1 + 2 = 8 though many of his staunchest supporters will try using any means necessary including (but not limited to) obscene language, hurling racial and ethnic slurs and a host of other intimidation tactics. And I doubt those tactics are condoned by their Conservative Christian moral foundation they are purported to live by.
