Bremer to ask UN for help in Iraq.

NEW YORK - Locked in a dispute with leading Shiite clerics over election issues, the U.S. civilian administrator in Iraq will ask the United Nations Monday to play a role in the creation of a new Iraqi government.

"The UN has a lot of expertise in organizing elections, electoral commissions, electoral laws and has a great deal of expertise to bear in the process of writing a constitution," said Paul Bremer.

Bremer will be in New York along with Adnan Pachachi, the current president of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, for a meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The U.S. wants an assembly in place by its June 30 deadline to formally end the occupation. Instead of a mass election, the U.S. plan calls for provincial caucuses from 18 regions to select members for the interim government.
