Wiretap Compromise in Works
Source: Washington Post

.....

A senior House Democratic aide said a bill could be sent to President Bush as early as next week. But significant issues remain, including those surrounding immunity, said Wyndee R. Parker, general counsel of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Parker, who said she hopes the House can take up the compromise legislation as early as this week, said a resolution has been delayed partly by the need for all members of the House Judiciary Committee to gain access to the letters and other relevant documents sent to the phone companies by the administration requesting their assistance.

This is not a compromise and the Democrats did not cave. The Democrats simply did what they intended to do all along, let the President have free pass to ignore the Constitution.

1. Spot On Spotbird.... They are Liars
Time for people to call them out instead of making up excuses for them. Actions speak louder than their weasel words.

2. "Compromise" is an odd way to misspell "capitulation"

3. Capitulation
implies that they gave in, but they didn't even do that, they simply went with plan A.

What is hard to understand is why they waited so long. This only made it worse politically, it doesn't make anyone trust their sincerity.

8. It's the only way they know to spell it.
To spell it otherwise would require growing spines. To not do it would require using said spines.

4. Can't tell you how outraged I am
Pelosi pompously told us that she was representing us by tabling impeachment in favor of "doing the business of the people."

Where are her apologists here on DU now? They were quite shrill at the time, as I recall.

6. Dont forget the "Caver" in Chief...
Harry Reid bent over and grabbed his ankles long ago.

If this passes, I hold the Democrats responsible for violating their oaths of office, and our Constitutional rights.

And I will have my revenge!

How are we gonna get rid of them? Run a progressive primary opponent?

The DCCC and the DSCC are incumbent protection rackets.

They pass this, and it's the last straw for me. I'm done with them!

12. Immunity only AFTER 9/11/01 and only if pre-9/11 info is released.
And, if they do not release the pre-9/11 records or lose them, they lose the immunity.

Otherwise, they also need to let us know WHO in the government said it was okay, and we'll have those people resign in disgrace AND FACE CHARGES.

I don't like compromise either, but this could fly -- maybe.

13. Lack of Accountability - it takes two to tango
Bushco couldn't push the envelope on executive branch excesses without help. Until 2006, the Republican controlled Congress was completely to blame. Now, though they don't have the 60-vote override, the Dem Congress isn't doing what they can to EXPOSE the criminality.
I get the feeling the Dems have been longing for cooperation and bipartisanship for so long, that they'll take whatever crumbs of it they can get. However, for the future of the country, these are not the issues to find common ground. There is no compromise with the initiation of Big Brother tactics.
