VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II never said "It is as it was" after watching Mel Gibson's film on the passion of Jesus, said the pope's longtime personal secretary, Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz.

"The Holy Father told no one his opinion of this film," the archbishop told Catholic News Service Jan. 18.

As I recently learned the statement "the jews killed jesus" is speculation. Certainly it was the Romans who held and enforced legal power at the time of Christ's death.

Hmm, IM a Catholic and a film fan, and if Mel wanted to shoot and show his movie I am fine with that. But to use what the A.D. and the co-producer knew to be a lie about what the POPE said thats a mortal sin. They probably said it because they knew the POPE was unlikely to feel that he needed to acknowledge such a lie. BUT sometimes even the POPE doesnt like to see the PAPERS get his name wrong. The right wingers have been pushing this film and now they got just what they deserved. Lets see Sean Hannity (A catholic) and Bill Orielly (another catholic) say that the POPE is lying!

seems it has been complete for months, but to review it must be by invitation only.

Perhaps DU can get an illegal screener and finally prove or disprove the charges of anti-semitism around the film.

6. Screenings have been by invitation only.

The movie is supposed to open on Ash Wednesday, which is Feb 25.
