Judge weighs Cheney probe today
Source: Rocky Mountain News

A federal judge today will hear arguments today on a motion to allow attorney David Lane to question Vice President Dick Cheney under oath in connection with an alleged assault in Colorado two years ago.

Steven Howards, who lives in the Denver area, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Cheney in Beaver Creek in 2006.

Howards and his attorney have argued that Secret Service agents have given such varied accounts of the incident that the only reliable source of information would be Cheney himself.

Attorneys for the vice president have refused repeated requests for a deposition.

9. UPDATE: Cheney may have to testify in Beaver Creek assault case
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 03:35 PM by maddezmom
A federal judge today kept alive the possibility that Vice President Dick Cheney may have to answer questions under oath regarding an alleged assault in Colorado two years ago.

But Denver U.S. Magistrate Judge Craig Shaffer made no final decision today, and said the most likely scenario would be for Cheney to take part in a written deposition, limited to two hours.

David Lane, the attorney representing the man who allegedly assaulted Cheney two years ago, wasn't happy with that. Lane wants Cheney's testimony videotaped and wants to be able to grill the vice president on the incident.

Lane said the worse thing would have been to not be able to depose the vice president at all, but that limiting Cheney's involvement to a written deposition would be the second-worse scenario.

Lane's client, Steven Howards, who lives in the Denver area, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Cheney in Beaver Creek in 2006.
