Spitzer's alleged call girl tab could hit $80,000
Source: AP

Updated 05:00 p.m., March 11, 2008

ALBANY, N.Y. — With pressure mounting on Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign over a call-girl scandal, investigators said Tuesday he was clearly a repeat customer who spent tens of thousands of dollars — perhaps as much as $80,000 — with the high-priced prostitution service over an extended period of time.

Spitzer and his family, meanwhile, remained secluded in their Fifth Avenue apartment, while Republicans began talking impeachment, and few if any fellow Democrats came forward to defend him. A death watch of sorts began at the state Capitol, where whispers of "What have you heard?" echoed through nearly every hallway of the ornate, 109-year-old building.

On Monday, when the scandal broke, prosecutors said in court papers that Spitzer had been caught on a wiretap spending $4,300 with the Emperors Club VIP call-girl service, with some of the money going toward a night with a prostitute named Kristen, and the rest to be used as credit toward future trysts. The papers also suggested that Spitzer had done this before.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a law enforcement official said Tuesday that Spitzer, in fact, had spent tens of thousands of dollars with the Emperors Club. Another official said the amount could be as high as $80,000. But it was not clear over what period of time that was spent.

32. Not to him. The money he can afford.
I expect he was trying not to bring home a disease, trying to be careful and discreet so what is happening now would NOT happen to him and his family.

And throwing "sex addiction" out there is just ridiculous. At the prices the Emperor's Club charged, his tab would have been over a million if he was a "sex addict."

Maybe there was something he really liked that his wife wouldn't do. Maybe he's in the throes of male menopause.

In 1858, there was one brothel in Chicago for roughly every three hundred people. They had their own directory and published their own paper. Prostitution just isn't that weird. It was pretty much common behavior for well-to-do men to visit houses of pleasure. Poorer guys paid for it on the street. That was in the days when good girls saved it for marriage. And there was no social security or social safety net. So girls sold what they had to sell.

Girls are still doing that. Men are still buying it.

Big, stupid, fuss.

55. Maybe you should read the transcripts.
apparently, the whores considered him difficult because he asked them to do unsafe things.

Looks like the well-being of his wife and family was the last thing on his mind.

Men kept slaves in 1858, too. Does that somehow justify modern day slavery?

someone who's studied the issue says there are many reasons

including thrill seeking

or, very related, wanting a completely 180 degree different experience

in Spitzer's case, many are suggesting he had some self destruct component

When you have a lot of money, you can buy anything, including poor kids forced to make a living off the street.

This is a case of rich meets poor, with the disadvantaged (most of whom happen to be women, and if "lucky," beautiful women) actually being allowed admittance into NBC studios. There are a lot of "Kristins" in American's streets, whether male or female. Let's shine a light on that, media.

Spitzer's wealthy - his father is a billionaire, and I think his wife comes from real money, too.) But spending that much money is just sick.

Remember Spitzer prosecuting that scumbag thief, the CEO of Tyco, and making a big deal out of a $6,000 shower curtain the CEO bought? Eliot is worse that that sack of shit, IMO.

Regulated and taxed! I'm sure the girls involved didn't mind the $80,00 windfall! So what if a rich old codger transfers wealth to a young hottie! It may be the last sweet thing befor he dies!

81. As if Spitzer were an anomaly
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 03:16 PM by lebkuchen
Who are clients 1-8?

Who told Spitzer about the Emperor's Club, and all the other places he may have patronized?

This is good-ole-boy to the max, how DC runs, and every other major and minor city.

Meanwhile, poor kids on the street get screwed every which way.

It's the Duke of Westminster, the world's 46th richest man, according to Forbes.

I'd like to hear about the other 7. It the US media were worth its salz, we'd know by now.

82. $80, 000, Well, now I know what Spitzer
meant when he said in his resignation speech "our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." I guess he rose and fell and rose and fell quite a bit.

Obviously, as a New Yorker and a Democrat, I voted for Spitzer and had great hopes, but I was always turned off by his aura of sanctimoniousness. The whole thing reminds me of Oedipus played by Uriah Heep.

$80k for hookers, amazing. What a society we live in. And now the hooker he met with will make a fortune telling her story. We live in some fucked up times.

97. I hear Penthouse has already offered her $1 million
and she has not yet accepted (more offers to come). She lives in a penthouse costing almost $7k/month.

Meanwhile, the good and beautiful and devoted wife, mother of Spitzer's three young daughters, who is also - by the way - highly educated and intelligent and gave up a career for him, has had her life shredded.

What a mess.

100. New York Has a Son of Sam Law
which states that one cannot profit from criminal activity. Ms. Dupre should be prosecuted for soliciting prostition, and the state sould take every penny that she earns from her sudden notoriety and apply to the costs to the state occassioned by Spitzer's resignation.

As to Spitzer, I had hoped him different. But he has proven himself to be just another arrogant and spoiled rich kid with a sense of entitlement, who fancies himself above the law.

Regarding all the whining about selective prosecution, stop it. There would have been no prosecution -- selective or otherwise -- if Spitzer had not engaged in criminal conduct. He is pondscum plain and simple and he has fallen to his rightful place in the dustbin of history

Just like those who want to "unrecommend" some threads, the need on the part of some DUers to censor others is, unfortunately, still alive and well.

lol its not news because the story is 5 days old now? Bashing poor Spitzer, your making him seem like a victim somehow. Poor guy, poor little rich scumbag spitzer who preaches on high while setting up dummy corps to pay for hookers. Great role model you got there.

98. All such girls are the girl next door.
They are all SOMEBODY's daughter, sister, friend, cousin, mother, wife, lover. They are all our neighbors. Whatever they do had a background, has a reason, whether or not we understand it.

I can't help but wonder how Spitzer would feel, if one of his daughters looked at her mom's suffering and "Kristen"'s lifestyle decided that "Kristen"'s life looked like a pretty good deal after all - and applied to the Emperor's Club? Of course, this would never happen, but such men hold quite a double standard: fine for someone else's daughter, never for his.

Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 05:35 AM by Chovexani
How many billions did Halliburton, Blackwater and friends steal from Iraq? And where the fuck is Osama and his travelling movie studio?

Don't get me wrong, what Spitzer did was inexcusable and he should face the full penalty for what he did, but I find the level of outrage to be a little disproportionate. This is trifling bullshit compared to the BFEE crimes that have been ignored. Did Spitzer's companion have access in Albany and state secrets?

This shit is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
