Seal protestors (Sea Shepherd) chased from St-Pierre port, Canada
Source: Toronto Star

ST-PIERRE – A militant environmental group opposed to the East Coast seal hunt was forced to flee the French islands of St-Pierre-Miquelon on Friday after angry fishermen cut the mooring lines of the group's flagship vessel. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society sparked outrage earlier this week when the group's leader, Paul Watson, said the recent deaths of three seal hunters north of Cape Breton was a tragedy, but the continued slaughter of seal pups "is an even greater tragedy."

On Friday, Watson's vessel, the Farley Mowat, was confronted at the wharf by two dozen residents of St-Pierre, the capital of the French territory south of Newfoundland. Police said the ship left after its lines were cut with axes, following a confrontation between the activists and the fishermen. Fisherman Carl Beaupertuis, 47, says when he heard Watson's comments about sealers he was deeply angered. "We cut the ropes ... because the fishermen of St-Pierre don't accept what Paul Watson said," he said. "He's not allowed to come in the harbour any more. It's finished for him."

Watson later confirmed that he had left St-Pierre-Miquelon after the mooring lines were cut. The vessel will return to the Gulf of St. Lawrence and intends to continue monitoring the seal hunt in that region and off the coast of Labrador, he said. Watson said that a member of his crew filmed the incident on St. Pierre and he may bring a formal complaint before the French courts. "That's a possibility. We'll have to look into that. We definitely have it documented," said Watson. "I had the cameras rolling, so we did identify the individuals."

Andre Varcin, a senior official with the French government, said it would be up to the local prosecutor's office to decide if any charges are warranted against the fishermen. Federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn has said Watson's group will be charged with allegedly getting too close to the seal hunt last weekend. Watson said he doesn't intend to dock his vessel at any Canadian harbours, adding that the Farley Mowat has enough fuel and food to last for months before returning to its home port in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

I hope they are safe. I did not realize Canada was so backwards in so many ways. Fisherman are allowed to be violent and police do nothing about it.

1. Not in Canada
St-Pierre-Miquelon is a territory of France. I believe the Farley Mowat does not have permission to enter into Canadian waters.

5. those fishermen seem to be very handy with axes and hakipiks
but not handy enough to actually hit a harp seal once to kill it.
I just watched a video in which the killer hit the seal pup numerous times and it was still alive when he started to skin it.
Despicable.

Canada, the world is watching you and boycotting your seafood too.

6. You can hardle blame them. His violent reputation precedes him.
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 02:06 PM by Bonobo
You can flame me. But it is true. They know what he did to the Japanese whaling vessels. He rammed them, threw rancid acid onto the decks, fouled the lines and planted a homing device on the ship.

They are protecting their economic interests and possibly even defending themselves from injury, since Watson has told anyone willing to listen of his intentions to ram and sink ships.

What else can you expect?

28. Thank You Bonobo - I've been waiting for a voice of reason on this issue
.
.
.

By the way, the cute white pups that Watson has on his website are NOT the ones getting clubbed/shot/killed - thats outlawed long ago.

If one could see the squalor that chickens live in so you can have your "wings" with your beer

If one could see the bawling calves as they are slaughtered for your prime veal

And so on

The seal hunt is a prime income for native - NATIVE Canadians, not big corporations

And with the receding ice floes, more seals will starve to death than the sealers could ever hope to kill.

I got royally flamed last time (years ago) for expressing this view, and I expect to get it again

I'll handle it.

BUT

You "flamers" check out how all the food on your table gets treated before you enjoy that steak/pork chop/chicken leg on your barbecue this summer.

A few thousand seals, not endangered either

Against BILLIONS of cattle/pigs/chickens living in squalor until you enjoy them on your BBQ.

Seals live a normal life until their end by us humans.

Our main FOOD animals suffer all their lives.

So gimmee a break.

...THINK ...!!!

32. Why think when you can express your "goodness" by jumping on a popular media-created issue?
It's too complex to have to view things rationally and balanced. I crave the kind of emotional gratification that self-identification with popular feel-good movements can bring me. Even if it doesn't make a bit of sense.

Your post is a perfect explanation of how people always want to demonize the "other" so they can define themselves as good in juxtaposition.

33. are high fashion seal fur coats enough "reason" for stopping the slaughter?
for thousands of years, humankind have been relying on domestic animals as a source of protein. There are alternatives now to be sure and many of us have found them. Many have found organically grown, raised beef, chickens, etc., that are not killed cruelly.

Fact is most of us know exactly which ones the so called "hunters" kill. They are 12 days up to 3 months so yes, they aren't the "cute little seals" pictured but we all have seen the videos of harp seals being skinned whilst still alive.

These barbaric assholes could care less about "humane" treatment of any animals let alone their little "enemies" the Harp seals who are about as defenseless as any mammal can be.

The very worst part of this senseless massacre is that it goes toward rich bitches who wear those coats ala Prada, Dolce Gabanna, Versaci, et al to impress their uncaring, unfeeling ilk!!!

Further, it is no fun nor does it make any of us feel all warm and fuzzy to be part of the outcry against this slaughter, to see the videos, and watch with our own eyes the way they do their God awful slaughter.

Moreover, Canada hasn't done a population survey since 2004 so they don't really know how many Harp seals there are now. Their history of mismanagement of their fisheries is famous the world over including the overfishing of Cod.
BTW, Cod makes up less than 15% of Harp seal diets!

There are at least three scientific studies which question the survival rate of these seal pups in light of recent global climate change which has decimated sea ice in the past 5 years and especially last year when it is thought that the mortality rate was very high indeed.

Now if you can call skinning a 3 month old seal whilst it's still alive - something I've seen in many videos - then by all means, continue to think that these seals "live a normal life until their end by us humans"!

I cannot call anything about the slaughter of 300,000+ seals for fur coats and trinkets "normal" and in fact I and most people around the world consider it to be a crime against a whole species.

BTW, The Farley Mowat WAS rammed by the Canadian Coast Guard. The proof is in the video just in.

hate Sea Shepherd all you want but the Canadian govt. has lied about Sea Shepherd's boat ramming their coast guard boat. See my post on Environmental forum.

Or alternatively, watch the video yourself - the Canadian boat came right up along side them, rammed them, then backed again right into their boat.

Further, I don't believe the Japanese whalers tales either. Never did!

looks like the native american hating pro-genocide bigot Watson got a taste of his own medicine. he loves to brag about his use of violent tactics and his siding with republicans against liberals. turnaround is fair play.

still, seal hunting is barbarous and should stop. hopefully a Obama or Clinton administration would begin to work to put an end to seal and whaling. thankfully no one was hurt in the altercation. still, its sickening how watson makes light of human life at all costs to his jihad and his lackeys and henchmen simply dittohead along.

we know all about "Indian Fighter" Paul up this way.

you don't come to washington state, pal around with jack metcalf and slade gorton, and then try to convince an indian that you're not a racist or a bigot, then threaten tribal elders. it don't work that way.

38. The French, they are a funny race

I'm not happy with the French tonight.

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=2385&messages=65&page=1

t's "Armentieres," pronounced (more or less) "Ar'-mun-tyeers'". Mademoiselle is pronounced (more or less) MAD -um- wa-SELLE.

Here are the words, from my father's WWII Army songbook. Note that these are only the clean verses. Verse order probably doesn't mean much. And I'm sure every outfit had their own home-made verses.

A mademoiselle from Armentieres, parlay-voo?
A mademoiselle from Armentieres, paylay-voo?
A mademoiselle from Armentieres,
She hadn't been kissed for forty years,
Hinky-dinky-parlay-voo.

Our top-kick there in Armentieres, ... soon broke that spell of forty years.

She might have been young for all we knew, .. . When Napoleon flopped at Waterloo.

She got the Palm and the Croix-de-Guerre (Croy dee Gair)... for washing soldiers' underwear.

She never could hold the love of a man, ... For she took her baths in a talcum can.

The mademoiselle was dressed in blue, ... The souvenir came in blue too. {Potassium permanganate?- Ferrara)

With her I flirted, I confess ... But she got revenge when she said yes.

The doughboy he had beaucoup jack ... till Mademoiselle got on his track.

My Froggie girl was true to you, ... she was true to the whole damned army too.

O Mademoiselle from gay Paree, you certainly did play hell with me.

You might forget the gas and shells, ... but you'll never forget these mademoiselles.

...That's all about the mademoiselle, but it gives more verses about army life and the was in Europe:

The French, they are a funny race, ... they fight with their feet and save their face.

The Cootie is the national bug of France, ... No matter where you hang your pants.

I didn't care what became of me, ... So I went and joined the Infantry.

The Yanks are having a hell of a time, ... wading around in the mud and slime.

The doughboy he went over the top, ... because he had no place to stop.

The medical corps they hold the line ... with C.C. pills and iodine.

The officers get all the steak, ... and all we get is a belly-ache.

Our grease-ball is a goddamn bum, he bails out swill and makes the slum.

The tin-hat, he ain't totin' a pack, We hope to Christ he breaks his back.

The General got a croix-de-guerre, ... the son of a bitch was never there. Hinky-dinky parlay-voo.

Notes from the book: "'Hinky-Dinky' was undoubtedly the real 'folk-song' of WWI. The British 'Tommies' sang it first, then the Marines picked it up, and finally the entire U.S. Army sang it, and sang it with gusto. The number of stanzas each single outfit made up for itself is legion, and most of them, alas, are completely unprintable."
