As U.S. heating aid drops, Venezuela chips in
By Vicki Ekstrom, Special to Stateline.org

Close to 200,000 poor families in 15 cold-weather states – in every Northeastern state except New Hampshire – can thank controversial Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for helping them heat their homes this winter.

The Venezuelan-controlled oil-refining company, Citgo Petroleum Corp., donated 45 million gallons of free home heating oil this winter in a move that bought good publicity for the country’s socialist leader, who famously called President Bush “the devil” in a 2006 United Nations speech.

Overall, federal heating assistance is dropping as needs are rising. The number of families receiving LIHEAP assistance has increased more than 25 percent over the last four years, from 4.2 million to 5.8 million, while federal funding has dropped from $2.4 billion in 2006 to $1.98 billion in both 2007 and 2008. President Bush wants to further cut LIHEAP aid to $1.7 billion, according to the budget he proposed in February, but Congress is expected to raise that amount.

Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin, plus Washington, D.C., and Indian tribes in 7 other states participated in this winter’s Citizens Energy program.

3. So as a resullt of administration's budget cuts, we're taking charity from
Venezuela so our citizens don't freeze to death.

Bush's America.

Please, God, let there be a BIG uproar over this. Every citizen needs to be aware of this.

4. We've actually been receiving this aid for a while now. So far, no uproar.

7. But then the Administration would try to find a way to block it.
And the illegality of their methods would not stop them.

10. I wonder why --
are we ashamed to admit it?

A dirty family secret. Wonder how many more there are.

5. It seems to me, that an astute Democratic candidate could...
make use of this embarrassing situation, in a presidential campaign.

Just a thought.

9. Absolutely!
And it's more than embarrassing -- it's shameful.

How could McCain possibly counter something like this?

13. I know!!
Don't think I haven't read things on here where people argue that he's so evil that he gives oil to those in need only to make himself look good as a distraction from his true evil-doings. I've seen that logic posted more than once.
