U.S. Denies Empire Bid (Ashcroft), Annan Warns of Jungle Law

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - The United States' top law officer denied on Friday that Washington was greedy for empire and stressed it needed partners to prevail in the war on terror.

Attorney-General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) was forced to defend the conduct of the war in the face of criticism at a major world summit.

"If you look at the United States and its performance, and where it is in the world and what it does in the world, it's not an aggressor," Ashcroft told the World Economic Forum (news - web sites) in Davos, Switzerland.

"The United States doesn't seek to consume territory or to acquire an empire," he told the gathering, at which Washington has at times faced criticism over its security policies and the war in Iraq (news - web sites).

Ashcroft was speaking from the same platform where U.N. chief Kofi Annan (news - web sites) had earlier told delegates that global security must not be dictated by the "laws of the jungle." Annan told business leaders that collective international security was at risk of falling apart.

2. I think it amazing that the charge was actually made
not that it isn't without grounds.

This was from a summit of business leaders too not politicians (according to my reading). I think that if the press reported on this the view that many in the world actually have of us would be shocking to many 'Murkans. I doubt they would really care but this was even a surprise to me.

,...As*wipe,...it is blatantly freakin' OBVIOUS your cabal (unfortunately representing the U.S.) is an aggressor, both within and outside these borders!!!!

Geez,...the man is either in serious denial or an out-n-out, big, fat LIAR!!! Of course, fascist-like individuals do engage in a LOT of rationalization for their behavior.

4. What the hell is Ashcroft doing speaking to the world community anyway?
Isn't that the State Department's job? Why isn't Colin Powell out there speaking for the US? What does any of this have to do with the Department of Justice?

5. Ah, yes, the "we don't want any territory" shuck and jive.
Just a few square miles, sniff, to bury our dead soldiers,
and a few more, sniff, for our military bases,
and the right to veto and remove any goverment we don't like,
and absolute license to screw the locals raw economically.

8. Any country that launches, or even states as policy
a preemptive war is an aggressor nation, Asscrack!

Good Goddess, I can't figure out how we let criminals like * and his droogs to piss all over America's former position in international law.

Now it is at an all time low around the world. Not even Vietnam caused us this amount of diplomatic inablity.

We are not effectively isolated, and our currency is under attack. How bad does it have to get before we impeach this clown????

11. "Ashcroft also acknowledged that Washington needed to communicate
better with Muslims both in the United States and around the world, to dispel the perception that the war on terror was directed against Islam."

He never met a Muslim he didn't want to cavity search.

12. Carefully phrased, like all their lies
"The United States doesn't seek to consume territory" - i.e. this can be parsed to mean simply that Bushco and friends do not actually plan to eat large swaths of the earth (although if it were possible...).

"or to acquire an empire" - starting an empire from scratch is not the same as 'acquiring an empire', which would imply that they were taking a pre-existing empire (although if it were possible...).
