Anti-porn bill's possible effects worry retailers

Booksellers, theater officials and video retailers in Colorado are cringing over the prospect of having to conceal books, films and plays with "sexually explicit" material or face punishment.

The fears have erupted in response to legislation introduced at the Capitol that could land booksellers, performers and others in jail for allowing minors to purchase or view materials deemed harmful to children.

Store displays, live theater performances and libraries are among the areas targeted by the bill.

Will this bullshit madness never end? And here I was under the impression that it was 2004, not 1924. Where the hell do these fuckwits (pun intended) get off, anyway? Who the hell are they to decide what people read, watch, listen to, think about?

Just because THEY don't have any kind of sex life and are Victorian-like in their uptightness doesn't mean they have the right to shove it down OUR throats as well. What a great thing to waste law enforcement and court time and money on. And they'll probably be the first to bitch and moan and wring their hands when businesses start leaving the state because of it

Of course, here I am in the great state of Ohio, whose legislature just fell all over themselves to pass a bill banning (horrors!) gay marriages, which was redundant because it was already forbidden by existing state law.

Yeah, the state's economy and environment and job market and health care is in a total shambles, the joblessness rate and rate of uninsured people without access to real health care is skyrocketing with no relief in sight, businesses and creative, talented professionals can't leave the state fast enough, but hell, we can rest easy now because they're focusing on the one true issue and saved us from the horror and sin of (gasp!) gay marriages. You can't get them to pay any attention at all to anything that matters to the average Ohioan, but they can drop everything and quit doing the nothing that they do to save us from gay marriages. Jesus H. Christ on a raft, no wonder the state's ranked in the 40's in almost every category compared to other states. And I'm afraid the great, enlightened state of Colorado isn't far behind if this is the kind of shit they allow.

I'm an Ohioan too (Cleveland). A friend of mine is an independent business development type who frequently travels to the West Coast to try and sell tech companies on Northern Ohio. A couple of days ago he showed me an e-mail from the head of a company that was on the verge of biting, but backed off because of the anti-gay law passing in Columbus. Many of their partner benefits policies would have become illegal if they moved here, and that would have been no small thing, as the letter stated that over 15% of the company's employees are out homosexuals.

We need to start censoring violent entertainment like Kill Bill, Grand Theft Auto, and Sopranos. This is the kind of crap that needs to be illegal. Anytime they talk about banning erotic stuff just change the subject to 'violent' media. Maybe the politicians will listen and take action. Censor violence, not sex!!!

In the first place, the broadcast networks do censor, so you get your wish there. But what do you mean by "This is the kind of crap that needs to be illegal"?
Not in this country or any other country that values freedom of speech, my friend. I'm fine with restricting how material may be accessed, and by who, but let's not start making any entertainment or art "illegal".

You know, every time I consider how fucked up California is -- we've got a serial groper for a governor, and yet a state ban on same-sex marriage -- and where a dozen cities are "nuclear-free zones," but we still can't keep the feds from coming and busting Tommy Chong for selling glass pipes -- I think: at least we've still got sex.

The only way we could be any looser would be to legalize prostitution -- but I have a feeling the reason we don't is that the big boys in Nevada would come break our kneecaps or something.

I used to entertain the idea of splitting the country in two as nothing more than pure fantasy -- but the older I get, the more sense it makes. The United States of the Pacific (CA, OR, WA, HI, and AK) -- and we'll "ex-patriate" the Repukes from Fresno and Orange County to Utah, and welcome the struggling masses of stranded liberals from Flyover Territory.

(I would miss New York, but maybe we can work something out once they agree to overturn that ridiculous law about booze on Sundays. I won't miss Alabama, where a lousy vibrator violates state obscenity laws.)
