North Carolina Republicans pull anti-Obama ad
Source: Reuters

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - North Carolina's Republican Party on Thursday withdrew an advertisement critical of Democrat Barack Obama's links to a controversial preacher, Republican John McCain's campaign said.

McCain senior adviser Charlie Black said he had been informed by the Republican National Committee's representative in North Carolina, that the state party had agreed to withdraw the ad.

2. They aired that one a little early.
They want to make sure he gets the nomination first before throwing their stockpile at him.

3. Exactly. This ad -- and many worse -- will be back for the GE.
Obama's people have had success thus far at intimidating broadcasters to play 'fair.' But all gloves are off when the GE comes. When it does, all the whining in the world won't stop the GOP from throwing all they've got at Mister O.

6. So defending your candidate against racist smear campaigns is whining?
So I guess it's better to just give in to Republican deceit without a fight, like Gore, Lieberman, et al. did in the Senate certification of the 2000 presidential election, like Kerry and Edwards and every liberal senator except Barbara Boxer did in the certification of 2004?

You must secretly like it when Democrats lose.

8. The great part about all of this is that Hillary and the repugs
are using everything they've got against Obama now and it's "fake news" and it's been flashed on the TV over and over and the GOP crowd will be bored with it and won't even listen to it anymore!!!! Hillary hasn't been hit with anything yet because Obama is running such an amazing campaign that he can be so far ahead without out using the smears and "fake news". Hillary even has the far right talk radio and TV "news" channels working in her favor and she still can't catch up with Obama. How is Obama intimidating broadcasters by the way? I wish I knew how to put the little character eating popcorn right here as I hear your response!

20. This has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. NC GOP attacks her, too
When you hear NC and GOP, remember Jesse Helms. While he is now too feeble to a factor, this is a rather dainty example of what NC politics looks like. The Clintons have been under continuous attack since before 1992; the Edwardses since he ran for Senate in 1997/1998. The email/whisper campaigns are incredibly nasty and use every possible attack: race, money, sexuality, unfounded rumors, doctored photos, anonymous leaflets, dirty tricks, ...

It will be interesting to see just what comes out in the next two weeks.

None of this is being pushed by Clinton. Of course, she might benefit slightly from some episode, but there will be more attacks on her too.

The enemy of your enemy is NOT your friend.

9. Several of the local stations refused to run the ad
It is very very unusual not to run paid political ads because of the free speech issues with limiting political speech.

The main target of this ad was not even Obama; it was at the Lt. Gov. Perdue and Treasurer Moore who endorsed Obama and are running for NC Governor and claimed they should have known better. This way, the GOP gets to use Obama against the Dem candidates early and often, even in the unlikely chance that Obama is not our nominee. It also gets to use all the classic NC election themes - race, religion, education -- and even let McCain look like the good guy in all this.

Now the Dem candidates can be asked by the media to respond. Oh joy! Having Rev. Wright dragged into our local races.

BTW Speaking of education, I believe Moore went to graduate school at the London School of Economics while Perdue has a PhD from UFL (geriatric health care?).

Those are the two I saw in reports.

BTW WRAL is the station where Jesse Helms was News Director before being elected Senator.

13. NYT says ad is still going to be aired
Looks like Reuters got it wrong - or some wishful thinking on Charlie Black's part. Reuters site is down just now (7:23 EDT), but here's a link to the NYT story which has in embed of the video of the ad itself. http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/24/nc-republicans-say-the-ad-will-go-on/

15. Good! Not 30 minutes ago, on NPR, I listened to the NC GOP chair, as she refused to back down.
And what a nasty, ignorant little piece of work she is, by the way.

18. Elizabeth Dole doesn't want to get involved
On Thursday, state Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Meek urged Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole to use her power to keep it off the air.

“As the highest-ranking Republican in the state, you have both the ability and responsibility to erase this stain on our state,” Meek said in a letter to Dole. “Your silence tells North Carolinians that you will also sanction similar gutter tactics in your own campaign.”

Dole said in an interview that she didn’t want to get involved.
