OGC unveils new logo to red faces
Source: Telegraph - UK

The logo, for the Office of Government Commerce, was intended to signify a bold commitment to the body’s aim of “improving value for money by driving up standards and capability in procurement”.

Instead, it has generated howls of mirth and what is likely to be a barrage of teasing emails from mandarins in other departments.

According to insiders, the graphic was already proudly etched on mousemats and pens before it was unveiled for employees, who spotted the clanger within seconds.

Staff have apparently now stripped their office of souvenirs bearing the logo, which could appear on eBay within days.

The logo, as it was meant to be seen, rather than at a 90 degree angle

4. I don't get the joke
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 10:26 AM by TechBear_Seattle

I see a Buddha or Buddhist saint, standing and with the right hand raised in a common gesture of compassion. Probably not appropriate for a government logo, but why the mirth?

Added: Nevermind, I got it now. It's kind of like those stereoscopic images, you have to stare at it until the picture just... er... pops out at you. :eyes:

9. Sorry, but that actually was my first impression
Yeah, I thought, "It might be a penis, but shouldn't it be in the C rather than the G?" It looked to me like a hand held palm out across the belly, a common enough gesture in Buddhism which represents compassion (thus my joke about not being appropriate for a government office.)

It took a few more looks to get it. :hi:

But did you wait until you saw it or post that you saw something spiritual and deep instead first?

Actually it took me a littel while too.

6. I like this bit best
...."and it is not inappropriate to an organisation that’s looking to have a firm grip on Government spend.”

It is a wonderful tribute to Britain that not only can a highly placed official say something like that, but also a serious (and seriously right of center) newspaper would print it, and no notable outcry ensues for either.

20. It was seeing the word "clanger" that helped me "see" the ogc pic, plus
word association. My mother referred to the Cerne Abbas Giant as "the chalk picture of the man with the ding-dong."

But once I did, I couldn't see the thing seriously any more. They will certainly need a new logo!

27. if the UK administers gov't functions as the US does, then I beleive
it's quite an appropriate logo for a government agency. I've always wondered what many government employees do while at work. Now I know.
