BAGHDAD - A bomb hit a motorcade carrying Iraq's first lady through Baghdad on Sunday, while the U.S. military said a roadside explosion killed four Marines in the deadliest attack in western Anbar province in months.

The motorcade bombing in Baghdad's Karrada district injured four of Hiro Ibrahim Ahmed's bodyguards but left her unharmed, according to the office of her husband, President Jalal Talabani.

She was headed to the city's central National Theater to attend a cultural festival when the attack occurred just before noon, said the presidential office. It was unclear if she was the target or if the bombing was random.

The four Marines were killed in Anbar province on Friday, but no other details of the incident were released.

BAGHDAD, May 4 (Reuters) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's wife narrowly escaped death on Sunday when a roadside bomb exploded near her convoy in central Baghdad, the president's office said.

She was not hurt but four bodyguards were wounded, the president's office said in a statement.

"One of the vehicles of Ms Hero Ibrahim's convoy hit an improvised explosive device in the road this morning," the statement said. "She was heading to the National Theatre to attend a cultural festival."

Police said two Iraqi soldiers and two civilians were wounded in the attack, which they said targeted a military convoy.

3. "Iraq's first lady"
What an odd phrase to use when describing the wife of the "president" of a country illegally occipied by another country. It's kind of like describing Madame Hardon as "France's first lady."

4. agree - there needs to be a manual for 'first ladys' of the world

how to survive the title of 'first lady'

and how to use whatever power a 'first lady' has (without being killed for using it)

(men are not gracious over giving up power)
