Food maker recalls over 286,000 pounds of meat, poultry
Source: Chicago Tribune

NEW YORK - A New York food company is recalling more than 286,000 pounds of meat and poultry because it might be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The voluntary recall includes several different brands of fresh and frozen products made by Gourmet Boutique, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Saturday.

Included are some types of chicken salad and sandwiches sold under the name Gourmet Boutique, and several frozen wraps and burritos sold under the names "Jan's" and "Archer Farms."

The problem was discovered through sampling by federal food safety inspectors and Florida agriculture officials, the USDA said.

15. Okay, I've got an admission to make.
I've been getting my dog those small Cesar brand foods, sirloin, filet mignon, turkey flavors, etc. Every time I open them, they smell really good, so I did it. I tasted one one day. It was good. Really. One thing they are not, though, is cheap - so poor people wouldn't save any money eating THAT kind of dog food. I don't have any desire to eat them either. Even though the taste was good, who knows?

6. All recalls are voluntary
If a company refuses to recall upon FSIS recommendation, the products can be seized by FSIS at the commerce (store) level.

http://www.fsis.usda.gov/OPPDE/rdad/FSISDirectives/8080.1Rev4.pdf
VIII. ACTION BY FIRM

A. FSIS outlines in “Product Recall Guidelines for Firms” (Attachment 1) the actions
it expects a firm to take to ensure that the maximum amount of product is recovered in
the shortest amount of time. The guidance includes model letters that a firm may use to
communicate with its consignees (including providing instructions for product retrieval
and extending the recall to additional consignees), model press releases, and
recordkeeping requirements.

B. In a case where a firm decides not to accept the Agency’s recommendation and
chooses not to conduct a recall, FSIS will detain any product that would have been
subject to a recall that it finds in commerce. FSIS, CPA will issue a press release
informing the public that product that appears to be adulterated or misbranded has been
shipped by the responsible firm, and that the firm has refused to recall it.

22. Ahhh!
Yeah, it's fantastic that regulatory agencies don't have the power to compel recalls anymore, they can only "recommend". The repugs are always talking about "smaller government" without telling anyone that 1. they just mean less regulation on businesses putting taxpayers at greater risk and 2. their governments are actually bigger. Gah! I can't wait for Jan 2nd!

7. I work as a food inspector at the state level;
My guess is that it was found after an outbreak on the state level and then turned over to USDA. USDA. for all that we're beginning to see, has been gutted by the bush administration. Typical bush reaction, you shoot the messenger , ....do away with the inspectors and don't have anymore problems..So what if a few old ladies or infants die, the market will take care of it's self......I don't know if our country can stand even the few months we have remaining in this administration.:banghead:

10. I'm thinking the same thing. I remember there being stuff
with long shelf life, like bagged crackers, candies, snacks, etc. Maybe other items, like jams as well. I don't know for certain that it is the same company.

ARCHER FARMS FOUR CHEESE RISOTTO
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- May 4, 2007 -- AULCORP FOOD MARKETERS INC. of TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA is recalling Archer Farms FOUR CHEESE RISOTTO flavor, 6 oz., with "Best If Used By 16JUL2008AA", because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The problem was discovered through microbiological sampling by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

Media with questions about the recall should contact company Vice President for Operations, Andrew Murphy at (718) 977-1200 (ext. 0163). Consumers with questions about the recall should contact Quality Control Manager Vanessa Lindsay at (718) 977-1200 (ext. 0166).

Gourmet Boutique recall grows
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, May 4, 2008
The Rhode Island Health Department announced yesterday that the recall of a food brand sold at Shaw’s markets has been extended to 35 products sold under the Gourmet Boutique label.

Gourmet Boutique announced the voluntary recall Friday of seven products because of possible Listeria monocytognes contamination, a bacteria that can cause serious infection, even death. The risk is highest among the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

For a list of items included in the recall, call the company’s hot line at (347) 887-0083 or go to www.fsis.usda.gov/pdf/recall_013-2008_release.pdf. Customers who bought items may return them to Shaw’s.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, headache, stiff neck, confusion or convulsions may occur

edited to add this info from consumer affairs website-note I frequently see Gourmet Boutique frozen items at our Canned Foods/Grocery Outlet store -they are the cheaper frozen meals-thank goodness I mostly buy the organic frozen meals there
they are recalling products that were produced up to SIX months ago...

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/05/meat_recall.html

The nationwide recall includes a variety of sizes, from nine-ounce packages of Gourmet Boutique Wrapanini Meatball Parmigiana to seven-pound containers of Gourmet Boutique Fruit and Nut Honey Chicken Salad Kit, USDA said. The meats being recalled are chicken, turkey, beef and pork
The fresh meat and poultry salad products were produced from April 19 to 24, while the frozen foodstuffs were produced from October 2007 to April 23, the agency said.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a Class I recall, which affects products sent to supermarkets and food stores nationwide. A Class I alert, which carries the highest priority, is issued when there is a “reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” the USDA's statement said.
