Country music superstar Eddy Arnold dies at 89
Source: Associated Press

Eddy Arnold, whose mellow baritone on songs like "Make the World Go Away" made him one of the most successful country singers in history, died Thursday morning, days short of his 90th birthday. Arnold died at a care facility near Nashville, said Don Cusic, a professor at Belmont University and author of the biography "Eddy Arnold: I'll Hold You in My Heart." His wife of 66 years, Sally, had died in March, and in the same month, Arnold fell outside his home, injuring his hip.

Arnold's vocals on songs like the 1965 "Make the World Go Away," one of his many No. 1 country hits and a top 10 hit on the pop charts, made him one of the most successful country singers in history.

Folksy yet sophisticated, he became a pioneer of "The Nashville Sound," also called "countrypolitan," a mixture of country and pop styles. His crossover success paved the way for later singers such as Kenny Rogers.

"I sing a little country, I sing a little pop and I sing a little folk, and it all goes together," he said in 1970.

He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966. The following year he was the first person to receive the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association.

I saw this and it made me think of my grandma. She used to love Eddie Arnold. May they both rest in peace.

1. I think of my grandmother also. She lived in an apartment after her retirement

and when the young guy who lived upstairs would make too much noise, she would put an Eddy Arnold record on her stereo and blast it (I mean full volume) until the guy upstairs quieted down to her liking.

I remember visiting her as a young teen and being really embarrassed when she would do this, but also finding it somewhat funny.

3. I love it! We used to do the same thing
to our next-door neighbors, young men who would wake us up with LOUD hip hop in the parking lot at 3:00 a.m. My latino husband had to be at work at 6:00 a.m. He finally brought home a tape of mariachi music. The problem went away!

Rest in peace Mr. Arnold!

It makes me think of her.

Make the world go away and get off my shoulders.

Say the things you used to say

and make the world go away.

12. thanks southern_belle
I'm still cracking up about it here. A lot of memories of mom go with that song and they have been rushing back to me all day since I heard about the death of Eddie Arnold of all people.

Thanks for the hug and here is one back  .

6. I'm not anyone's grandmother but my daughter

dated a guy I didn't like. He hated country music. When I thought he had been at the house long enough, I'd put on Lyle Lovett & crank it. I could get him out of the house w/i 5 minutes. Occasionally a little passive-aggressive behavior goes a long way.

My dad is gonna be bummed by this news.

5. I actually liked "Make the World Go Away."
Stones, Beatles, Spoonful, Animals fan in 1966, but I thought "Make the World Go Away" was a really well done song.

Married to his wife for 66 years, and after she died in March, he was ready to go. I envy those who have had a relationship like that.

Nice voice, nice life. Thanks, Eddy.

10. Wrong guy. That was Eddie Albert, this is Eddie Arnold.
By the way, he would have been 102 in April.
