House panel votes to cut European missile funds

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A House of Representatives committee voted on Wednesday to withhold over half of about $720 million sought by the Bush administration to start building missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic.


The Democratic-controlled House Armed Services Committee cut $233 million in research and development and $140 million for military construction projects, pending approval from the two countries for the projects, among other things.

The action was part of the committee's version of a $540 billon-plus fiscal 2009 defense policy bill.

The Senate Armed Services Committee said May 1 it had agreed to fully fund President George W. Bush's request for $719.8 million to start deploying up to 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and installing a tracking radar in the Czech Republic.

GOOD, then we might get Russia on our side again... THis missile system they wanted to build in Czech Republic and in Poland was provoking Russia more than even the Iraqi war was doing... And as a european, who are living in a country with shared border with Russia I would say I was not very happy about this system they wanted to build in this two country...
