Obama tells Tenn.'s GOP: 'Lay off my wife'

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Democrat Barack Obama has a message for Tennessee's Republican Party: "Lay off my wife." Obama, his party's presidential front-runner, and his wife, Michelle, were asked in an interview aired Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" about an online video last week by the state's GOP taking her to task for a comment some considered unpatriotic.

"The GOP, should I be the nominee, can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record," Obama said. "If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful because that I find unacceptable, the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family." He called the strategy "low class."

The video, posted on YouTube, centered on remarks Michelle Obama made while campaigning in Wisconsin last February, when she said: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." The four-minute video replayed the remark six times, interspersing it with commentary by Tennesseans on why they are proud of America. In a news release that included a link to the video, Tennessee's GOP said "the Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America." It urged radio stations to play "patriotic music" during Michelle Obama's visit to Nashville last Thursday.

Michelle Obama later clarified the remark, saying she meant she was proud of how Americans were engaging in the political process and that she had always been proud of her country. "Whoever is in charge of the Tennessee GOP needs to think long and hard about the kind of campaign they want to run, and I think that's true for everybody, Democrat or Republican," Obama said in the ABC interview, adding: "These folks should lay off my wife."

- I'm sure those dumbbells Repukes down here in Tennessee don't want to open up their flanks in the use of wives to make political points, now do they? I mean Cindy McCain. Not that's fodder....

1. I'd tell McCain and the national GOP that if they can't control their state parties
that the next time Michelle becomes the subject of a campaign hit that it's open season on Cindy as well.

3. Open message to the GOP:
For the first time in MY adult life, I am really proud of my country. So take your bullshit smear tactics and shove it. I know a hell of a lot of people that feel the same way Michelle Obama feels. This country has been an embarrassment to me for my ENTIRE adult life. Until Barack came along and helped me to see that the people of this nation aren't really all that bad and corrupt after all.

That sentence structure makes no sense whatsoever. I am having to guess at what, precisely, you are asking. Please clarify. Take a deep breath, and try to release some bitterness, and then ask again.

Oh yeah, let's attack a victim because she didn't stop it. That is totally stupid! At least Michelle's words were her own actions, not those of someone else. What if Obama strayed during their marriage, is Michelle then a person to look down on? Shame on you!!

I'm not slamming you as a Hillary supporter, but as a woman who has worked with hate victims and never thought I'd see this at a Democratic website.

31. And Hillary's corporate lawyerin'?
Does that get a pass?

Part of being an attorney is working for corporations. Like it or not. It's how many make a living at their craft.

I have actively worked to stay out of the sniping back and forth on this forum, and will continue to do so. That said, I agree with the other posters on this thread, who have responded to you on this post: Please, get a sense of proportion and balance. Posts like this do nothing, absolutely and positively nothing for your candidate's case in either the short or long term.

96. I don't even know WTF you're talking about
I'm just sick of all the one side claiming the other one is the only one that does such-and-such bullshit, personally. I try not to make sweeping generalizations about one or the other. I don't understand why you seem to have no qualms about being insulting towards me and making assumptions about me when I'm willing to bet you have very little, if any, idea about who I support and have supported and the type of posts I tend to make. Your post really doesn't make any sense to me, in light of these facts, but I assume you're trying to claim that because I pointed out that some Clinton fans are actually guilty of something I'm automatically an "Obamabot" who thinks I'm superior, because, of course, all Obama supporters are extremists who all think alike and march in lockstep. No, the behavior of fanatical Clinton zealots is not my "standard of behavior" and neither is the behavior of fanatical Obama zealots.

44. Except that's not what she said. That's the edited version that was
pumped out by faux nooze.

She said, for the first time in her life she's really proud to be an American. Which means she's been proud, but now she's REALLY proud. The qualifer "really" is important. It denotes that something happened that INCREASED her pride in being an American. I heard the edited version on Tom Hartman's radio show and he thought at first it was a bad thing to say too, then someone called up with the unedited version and he realized it was no big deal, really.

83. As opposed to previous pride being unreal, as in NOT real?
Reminds me of an article in the New York Times after George C. Wolfe took over the Public Theater in NYC. One of his zealous new hires was quoted as saying she felt welcome at the Public for the first time. Same deal. Same mindset.

She can only control it so much. It's how she feels, and we're going to hear about it again.

108. more like there's simply a series of degrees...
"As opposed to previous pride being unreal, as in NOT real?"

No... I think it's more like there's simply a series of degrees of pride (as there are in all of our emotions). One could ask: "Are you not proud, somewhat proud, proud, or really proud...".

Choosing "somewhat proud" or "proud" in effect nullifies the possibility of the first choice.

That's how I see it, anyways...

38. As a fervent Barack supporter, I say
"Suck it up, sir." This is big-league politics. When his wife opened up with this "This is the first time I've been proud to be American," she opened the door.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was pretty proud to be American during Bill Clinton's presidency.

I can't stand Hillary these days, but I thought she handled the GOP's bullshit pretty well as First Lady. Let Mrs. Obama do the same thing. Besides, the more Repugs attack her, the worse they look.

Suck it up, sir. You want to be president, you negotiate the road bumps that you KNEW were coming anyway.

46. I don't think he needs to "suck it up"
Just because he made this statement does not mean that he is surprised or injured by the attacks on Michelle. On the contrary, I am sure that they were certain it would happen and were expecting it. IMO this is just an excellent way to defuse those attacks and throw them back in the faces of the attackers.

91. Maybe some will take it that way.
I honestly take it as bordering on whining, especially since his wife is campaigning for him - and I'm on his side. I'm sure his opponents will take it as HYSTERICAL whining, try to spin it as childish inexperience and being unprepared for the heat of the office - and the media is sure to support such claims (remember how much attention the Swifties got even though they never proved a single allegation? The media is NOT our friend).

This is why I want him to "suck it up."

102. Excellent post. First ladies are definitely fair game. They need to be tougher than this.
If they can't handle lame criticism from the other side, and call it "an attack", they'll soon look weak. Cindy McCain is fair game, and Michelle needs to understand that they're not going to lay off of her.

42. It's obvious that Michelle misspoke...
...Instead of 'for the first time I'm proud'...if she had said, and I believe it's probably what she meant, 'I've never been prouder', none of this would have come up. We all know what's behind it, black Americans haven't had a lot to point to in this country when it comes to being able to believe in the 'All men are created equal' thing. So how the hell should they feel? I defy any white man or woman to honestly declare that they would be proud, without qualification, of America if they had been treated as their black counterparts.

We have a chance with Barack Obama to turn a page in our history and finally set the record straight about race in this country - and if we can clean up the mess of bush/cheney at the same time, how great would that be? Regardless, of all that, we will always have racism and those that feel open to exploit it. Tennessee has it's Onieda (N*****, don't let the sun set on you in Oneida), just as every Southern state and probably a lot of others. do, so it'll be tough to bring 'em around, but the sooner people of good will admit that that part of their 'upbringing' was wrong and that we're indeed all in this together, the sooner we can fulfill the 230 years of promise of what makes this country great - and it ain't the Nazi concept of Aryan purity and supremacy.

81. As a woman,
I want to know when we will start receiving equal treatment. Yeah, I know Hillary isn't going to win - too many stupid mistakes, thoughtless words, poor planning etc. She doesn't deserve to win, and won't. But my God, the treatment she's received at the hands of Dems is totally deplorable and sexist. No man would ever face the withering treatment she's recevied just because she's a woman. So, I want to know, when do the rules of civil treatment come into existence for women, when will we be treated like people and not an adornment only?

47. The GOP is not going to lay off Michelle Obama...so...
Let's see...

* Cindy McCain won't release her tax returns; what ill-gotten gains of her crooked husband is she concealing in them?
* Cindy McCain is loaning Hensley & Co's corporate jet to McCain's campaign at below fair-market value, and not reporting it as a campaign contribution. How many federal laws does this violate?
* How much makeup does a trollop plaster on, and is that more or less than what Cindy wears?
* Does America really want a homewrecker as First Lady?

You guys in the GOP want to call Michelle Obama to task for not saying something exactly the way you'd like her to? Fine. Our side's gonna have more fun with Cindy McCain than y'all ever had with Hillary Clinton. You know what they say, kids--payback's a motherfucker.

If you run for political office, esp high office, everything in your life gets scrutinized and discussed. However, it is good that he is making these statements because even if everything about you gets scrutinized, you still can stand up for yourself, and should.

Edited on Mon May-19-08 02:10 PM by jazzy062
In other words "bring it on". If you want to play that game....you're going to lose BIG. Cindy McCain would sink his campaign by the time she is exposed to be the drug addicted, lying, scheming person that she is. Plus the fact that her crimes were covered up by one of McCain's buddies. They do NOT WANT TO GO THERE.
