Bob Corker Calls On State Party To Stop Playing Online Video Targeting Michelle Obama

(AP) Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., has asked the Tennessee GOP to pull its Michelle Obama online video that her Democratic presidential candidate husband criticized.

The video features replays of Michelle Obama saying that "for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country."

Sen. Barack Obama criticized the Tennessee GOP as "low class" for posting the video. Michelle Obama has said her comments were misconstrued.

Tennessee Republican Party spokesman Bill Hobbs declined comment when contacted by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Corker's chief of staff, Todd Womack, said in a statement that their office has "strongly encouraged the national party and state parties to absolutely refrain from getting involved in negative personal campaigning."

1. They apparently just read up on Cindy McCain
But I want to say, I am the same age as Michelle, came of age during Reagan, and I know EXACTLY what she meant.

2. This from a guy that spent the better part of 2006 calling Harold Ford a Big Black Pimp

The essence of Corker's campaign: "I do declare, this Negro likes him some fancy cars, and you might could faint to have him round your blonde granddaughter. Mmm hmmm."

3. Expect that and the bitter remark to be played in the MSM and in GOP ads all year.
Over and over and over.

It's all they got.

5. It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to ask permission
Run it and ask for it to be pulled. Seems to be the GOP's modus operandi lately. The ad gets played, the point gets out, they look like heroes having it pulled.

Disgusting!

9. And the MSM will replay the croc-tears for days
so they can also repeat the offensive message, but ever-so-slyly.

6. I'm not joking
But if the Dems win a large enough majority this November, it may be time to "revisit reconstruction".

Seriously, looking at the "wingnut" electoral map of the past half century, you'd have sworn the South won the war!

7. Rule Change
Since the Smear Boaters character attacks, FEC rules have been adjusted to only allow 527 to stick to issues, not character. This prevents the candidates and parties from hiding behind them during the campaign. AS mentioned on Centrisity this AM:

What 527 groups ultimately do depends on how lawyers advising these groups interpret a series of Federal Election Commission cases over the past two years that heavily fined 527 organizations that participated in the 2004 presidential election.

Among those fined was the group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which raised unsubstantiated allegations about John Kerry's Vietnam war record. The FEC has since adopted rules that say groups can air "issue ads" but can't criticize the character of a candidate.

"We can't do in 2008 what we did in 2004," said Chris LaCivita, a Republican operative who worked on the Swift Boat ad campaign. "Everything has to be issue based."

So not only are campaigns and parties going to try and steer away from being labeled a bad guy, 527s will be hushed as well. I'm not cynical enough to believe this will be a clean fight, but it may not be as bad as what they did to Kerry

8. There is no FEC - it doesn't matter what the rules are.
Bush has nominated a famously anti- clean elections idiot for commissioner, so the Dems have to block him, shutting the FEC down. That's so McLame can unleash the dogs of war.
