No runoff -- Adams is city's next mayor (Portland, OR elects gay man)
Source: The Oregonian

Sam Adams, a child of poverty, an openly gay man and a self-professed policy wonk, will be Portland's next mayor.

The city commissioner soundly defeated 12 other candidates Tuesday to assume the top office in the city and one of the tallest bully pulpits in the Pacific Northwest. He captured 58 percent of the vote to avoid a November runoff against travel agency owner Sho Dozono.

It is common in Oregon and Washington for municipal elections to be non-partisan. If a single candidate wins a majority of the vote in the primary, that person is declared the automatic winner and no general election is held for that race. With 58% of the vote -- and out of a field of 13 candidates -- Adams is now the mayor-elect of Portland.

4. The new mayor has 7 months before he takes office.
That might be a big pro but I'm sure there are negatives not taking office sooner.

6. For one thing, he doesn't have to go through another election
He has seven months to plan his administration, rather than five months of campaigning and then two months to plan. And then there is the money, which can be saved and moved forward to his re-election.

7. Sam Adams... always a good decision!
Given that Portland is perhaps as well-known for its microbreweries as Seattle is for its coffee, perhaps it's appropriate that the mayor is named Sam Adams--even if Sam Adams beer is brewed by a company based in Boston.
