Myanmar junta agrees to admit "all" aid workers: Ban

NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar (Reuters) - Myanmar's Senior General Than Shwe agreed on Friday to let in "all" aid workers to help the 2.4 million survivors of Cyclone Nargis, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said after meeting him.

"He has agreed to allow all aid workers," said Ban, who is on a mission to convince the reclusive military government to permit more foreign relief expertise three weeks after the cyclone struck, leaving nearly 134,000 dead or missing.

Asked if this was a breakthrough, Ban said: "I think so."

1. What creeps me out is to wonder how much of their delay is due to
our own government putting the brakes on to cover for Bush cronies and their interests there.

6. Right. So, while Bush is berating this junta -- there's no question
they are brutal bastards -- in public, in private his cronies are protecting their investments while people are starving and dying.

and not other countries as far as I'm aware other than the fact that other countries could conspire with the former two.

Check out British Airways Flight 149 to see what I mean : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_149

and here : http://english.aljazeera.net/English/archive/archive?ArchiveId=36856

If you search deeper you'll find the video of the UK TV documentary we had on the subject some time ago.

7. Having an armada of warships and a huge fleet of warplanes
enter your territory is pretty daunting.

More so daunting when the country which owns those warships and warplanes just issued sanctions on your country the day your country was hit with a national disaster. Not only were those sanctions were not lifted after the disaster, the president of the aggressive country went on international news and re-stated the need to keep the sanctions.

So the people of your country not only have to deal with the natural disaster, it has to deal with the national disaster of having its money being frozen on the international stage.

It is a shame that any aid given out by the US of A has to be delivered only on military vessels. Load up all the aid people and supplies on cruise ships and passenger planes and see how fast Burma accepts the aid.

9. Considering what a standup job was done following Katrina....
I can understand not wanting the US's direct help.

Then again, our military could have done a great job in NO after Katrina, but they were not sent there.
