March driving down for 1st time since 1979: government

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sign that Americans are curbing their driving in the face of record-high gasoline prices, U.S. data released on Friday shows that highway miles driven in March fell 4.3 percent from a year earlier, the first March decline since the last major oil shock in 1979.

According to the Department of Transportation, Americans drove 11 billion miles less in March 2008 than a year earlier, marking the sharpest year-on-year drop in the history of the agency's reporting, which dates back to 1942.

1. i know i'm driving less

and it sucks. to work and to home, to work and to home. i actually drove home and had my son pick up the mail later instead of stopping for it, so i wouldn't have to turn off the car and restart it, using those extra drops of gasoline.

2. And gas prices were about 50 cents cheaper then.

What about now with $4.00 gas? What about when it hits $5.00.

This economy's gonna come to a screeching halt. People won't be able to afford to drive to work.
