German parents post baby on eBay for 1 euro
Source: Yahoo! News

BERLIN - Authorities in southern Germany said Saturday they have taken custody of a 7-month-old boy after his parents posted an ad on eBay offering to sell him for one euro, the equivalent of $1.57.

Unglaublich.

From the auction page: "Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches (70 cm) long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller," police quoted the ad as reading."

1. They should have said the baby had a birthmark shaped like the Virgin Mary.
Then they could have asked some real money.

2. From the "You Can't Make This Up" files, seriously.
Poor kid. Probably not a happy 7 months, either.

4. Good thing it was a boy
If it had been a girl, a certain now-prominent "religious" group would have snapped her up in no time.

They may have even ponied up the shipping costs- most likely air freight, using an animal carrier with a lot of straw and shredded newspaper for comfort...

6. sounds like it really was just a joke...
A stupid, tasteless joke with no punchline: isn't that the definition of "German humor"? So eine Überraschung! ;)

I'd say give them some sort of citation for disorderly conduct or whatever the charge would be for wasting police time. Though, maybe the kid should still be taken from them because they're fucking morons, and the kid might end up getting hurt from their stupidity in some other way, but not because it's in danger of being sold on the black market.

17. BBC World Service report
I heard about this on the Beeb today. The mother was quoted as saying it was a joke. But I guess the authorities have to look into anyway for the child's sake. Especially after those bloody Austrians locking kids in their basements.

13. I'll bet just about every parent has joked about their offspring at one time or another....
..and said something like "Ahh..Send it back" or even "And I wanted to have children"

They're not serious and shouldn't be taken so...

16. Calvin: Dad, where do babies come from?
Calvin’s Dad: Most people just go to Sears, buy the assembly kit, and read the instructions.
Calvin: I CAME FROM SEARS?!?!
Dad: No, you were a Blue Light Special at Kmart. Almost as good, and a lot cheaper.
Calvin: AAUUGHHH!
Calvin’s Mom: Dear, what are you telling him now?!

18. A standing joke in our family is that we'll sell our boy to Mormons
Presumably because they like the big families and so would therefore always be willing to pony up cash for another one. We keep joking that, as he gets older, the asking price goes down--he's not growing, he's depreciating.

I'm willing to bet you can get a lot more than one euro for a healthy seven month old. Heck, they are worth a lot more than that if you strip them for parts!

There's no way this could be serious. It's even pretty funny.

I have been threatening to put her on ebay. As this story broke I received more than one call from people who have heard me say that to let me know that others have tried doing it and failed.

ehnnn... If so, I hope they don't lose their kid over this... If they truly were trying to sell it, then that's different, of course.
