Fred Meyer pulls Gardenburger products off shelves (Kellogg Co.'s voluntary recall)

Fred Meyer pulled Gardenburger products off its shelves today, and the regional head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Seattle said he wanted to know more about the circumstances surrounding Kellogg Co.'s voluntary recall of the veggie patties.

The grocer cited the same reasons for the move that Vancouver-based Burgerville used earlier this week in removing two varieties of Gardenburgers from its menu.

Burgerville officials contacted Kellogg, Gardenburger's Battle Creek, Mich.-based parent, last week after restaurant workers noticed abnormalities in the look and texture of the patties. Today, Burgerville introduced a vegetarian patty developed by a Lake Oswego entrepreneur as a temporary replacement.

Kellogg declined to elaborate on what might be wrong with the product.

Damn- I have a bunch of these in the freezer. Guess I'll have to take 'em back.

Apparently Burgerville, a Northwest fast food chain, was the first to notice that something was awry. They've now switched to a small local producer.

"Last year, Marie Osmunson was making her vegetarian patties for only family and friends.

Starting today, customers at all 39 Burgerville restaurants in Oregon and Washington can join in.

Through a whirlwind of events that included a chance tasting, hastily arranged meetings and the sidelining of a food-products behemoth, Osmunson has been called into the big game.

Weeks ago, a representative for Burgerville, a chain of 39 restaurants with a reputation for offering local products, tasted Osmunson's patties at an area grocery store. Tuesday afternoon, a Burgerville official told Osmunson, "I think we're going to want some product!"

6. I love the sauce, but the texture is kinda gross.
But OMG if they bottled the sauce I'd buy it by the gallon.

8. Ugh, tried them the other day and I thought just the opposite
The soy was surprisingly meat-like, but the sauce was way too sweet. Guess I'm not a big fan of BBQ, anyway- my mom brought over 2 packages and she's gonna get the other one back.

9. I like the texture, but wish it were more of a sweet barbecue sauce.
I wish they sold the ribs alone, and let me put my own sauce on 'em. A local guy here makes this sweet barbecue sauce that is wonderful!!

7. Amy's Texas Style veggie burgers are the best!
Edited on Sat May-24-08 07:24 PM by CountAllVotes
Have you tried them? They have peppers in them and with a slice of cheese (vegan or regular) they are really good! I don't like any of the other brands luckily. I found them on sale a couple of weeks ago and bought 5 boxes of them @ $3.99/box.

Glad these have not been recalled!

17. Amy's rocks. I love the California variety. Had them last night for dinner.
Baked them. Then broiled the tops for a couple of minutes with a little balsamic vinegar and vegan cheese on top.

Yum!

10. go veg!
it's right for the environment, and animals deserve a life.

to meat eaters I say... go to a slaughterhouse for a day. if you can watch that and then live with it and eat it and support what they're doing, you have my blessing. Because every time you take a bite of a burger you are supporting that process. You're saying "yes" to it. It's all about the choice to be conscious of our actions, or to ignore them.

i've been a vegetarian for over 20 years and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Go for it!

18. Have them stand downwind from a feed lot. It's not the typical farm yard
smell, it's fear, disease, and decay.

They create something good, and then sell out to the corps, because if they don't, the corps will start a competing product and have all the great distribution channels.

15. I bought some a few days ago and had two and they were not like
ones I bought in the past. They looked anemic. There was no vege-burger there - it was like an oatmeal burger.

I hope they did not out-source them.

21. I loved Gardenburgers years ago, but didn't like them last year when I tried them again.
I thought maybe they just weren't as good as I remembered but maybe the recipe has been changed.
I don't like most other veggie burgers out there so it was very disappointing.

16. If the product is not organic, it probably contains
genetically modified ingredients. Beans and rice is better.

I don't believe it is that difficult to make them yourselves out of fresh ingredients.

Anyone with a recipe they want to share?

I have gotten to like Morningstar Farms "Mushroom Lover's" burgers better than real hamburgers.

(I am NOT vegetarian).
