Lawmakers in Nepal abolish the monarchy
Source: Associated Press via Yahoo! News

The world's last Hindu kingdom became its newest secular republic Wednesday as Nepal's lawmakers, led by former communist insurgents, abolished the monarchy that had reigned over this Himalayan land for 239 years.

Throughout the day, thousands of people marched, danced and sang in the streets of Katmandu in anticipation of the vote, waving red hammer-and-sickle flags as dour King Gyanendra awaited his fate in the pink concrete palace that dominates the city's center.

He finally found out the fate of his throne late in the day when, as expected, the newly elected Constituent Assembly declared the country a republic and abolished the monarchy by a vote of 560-4. The assembly's 37 other members were not present.

"We have entered a new era today," said Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, calling Nepal's rebirth as a republic "the dream of the whole nation."

2. Red hammer and sickle banners don't encourage me that democracy is coming to Nepal.
Let's hope they don't get taken over by their large, communist neighbor to the north!

Nepal on Wednesday scripted a new chapter in its turbulent history as the new Constituent Assembly abolished the 240-year-old monarchy and declared the country a "secular, federal democratic republic."

The 601-member assembly met at the Birendra International Convention Centre on Wednesday evening where a motion was passed to declare the country the world's newest republic.

After a series of meetings, the Seven Party Alliance agreed to table the motion of republic in the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly, dominated by Maoists.

Out of 601 members of the Constituent Assembly, 572 were present during Wednesday's meeting....

What I wouldn't give to talk to some of my old Nepalese pals from college now. Things sure have been happening in Nepal these past years! What a development!
Are they going to change the flag and incorporate the hammer and sickel?

9. I'd rather hope they don't.
The one thing Communism and Capitalism have in common is shattering cultural identity.

11. It was a very troubled monarchy - The 2001 Nepalese Royal Massacre
Edited on Wed May-28-08 05:39 PM by Canuckistanian
According to the official report, Crown Prince Dipendra had been drinking heavily and had "misbehaved" with a guest which resulted in his father King Birendra telling his son to leave the party. The drunken Dipendra was taken to his room by his brother Prince Nirajan and cousin Prince Paras.<1>

One hour later Dipendra returned to the party armed with an assault rifle (possibly a G3A3 as shown by a picture of him holding one) and fired a single shot into the ceiling before turning the gun on his father King Birendra. Seconds later Dipendra shot one of his aunts. He then shot his uncle Dhirendra in the chest at point blank range when he tried to stop Dipendra.<1> During the carnage Prince Paras suffered slight injuries and managed to save at least three royals, including two children, by pulling a sofa over them.

~

Dipendra's mother and brother Nirajan confronted him in the garden of the palace where they were both shot dead. Dipendra then proceeded to a small bridge over a stream running through the palace where he shot himself.
