Obama Says General Election Starts After Tuesday's Results (South Dakota/Montana Primaries)

Asked aboard his plane returning to Chicago from Colorado if the general election will begin after Tuesday’s voting in South Dakota and Montana, Obama answered in one word: "Yes."

Obama said he believes at that point he will be the nominee. But with three primary contests left -- Puerto Rico on Sunday and Montana and South Dakota on Tuesday -- Obama is still couching his prognosis ever so slightly.

"You know, it’s technically not over until we have the number of delegates needed to secure the nomination," Obama said of the 2026 delegates needed. "Once we have that number, we will focus on the general election."

The Obama campaign has no doubt been running a general election campaign for the last few weeks: campaigning in general election states and singling out the presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain more than his Democratic rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton -– a strategy that caused some to question the patience of a candidate that is still involved in a battle for the democratic nomination.

"We are only a few days away," Obama told reporters. "We have waited this long. We can wait a while longer."

1. Is it 2025 or 2026 delegates needed?
I have seen that there are 4049 delegates, so 2024.5 is half of that, 2025 is a majority.

Do people just get confused and think 2025 is a tie and you need one more to make it a majority?

Or is 4049 no longer the total (pending resolution of the FL and MI issue)?

Anyone know?

3. Finally
Obama can pick his VP and start to tell his LOGICAL policies to the American people

Hillary needs to bow out gracefully next week sometime. I'm not opposed to her being VP.

Name recognition counts with Joe and Jane average.

5. No Hillary for VP!
Not after the way she has run this campaign. She's *way* too conservative, bellicose, and tolerant of racism for my tastes.

7. Obama: New campaign starts after Tuesday
Source: cnn.com

Obama expects general election campaign to start next week

(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama said that Democrats will know their presidential nominee after the final two primary states vote next week -- and in his view, the general election campaign officially will begin.

"After Tuesday, we will . I think Saturday will be important, put the Michigan-Florida issue behind us," Obama told reporters Wednesday on a flight from Denver, Colorado, to Chicago, Illinois.

The party's Rules and Bylaws Committee meets this weekend to consider what to do about delegations from Florida and Michigan, which broke ranks to hold primaries earlier than party rules allowed.

"We've got three contests in succession. And at that point, all the information will be in," Obama said, referring to Sunday's vote in Puerto Rico and Tuesday's primaries in Montana and South Dakota.

There's a little more at the link.
